Help With H4n Needed

The manual for the H4n is quite confusing. Can some GH1/H4n users tell me what you have discovered to be effective settings for interview/documentary type shooting? I am especially interested to know about the limiter, compression and other settings that will get best vocal quality. Also, I do have a good shotgun and lav but I would also like to know how to get the best results with the onboard H4n mics. Thanks!

Let me ask if anyone has gotten decent results with the onboard mics that can actually be used in a video. I haven't and wonder if I was making some trivial, but important, mistake. Other than being too lazy to hook up my XLR mics.
 
OK, did a bunch of testing tonight. Best results were with my ME66 Sennheiser Shotgun Mic. Far superior to the onboard mics. And the sound is fantastic.
