Help With Final Cut Pro + Canon 7D, Best Plugins, Best Format For Real Time...

i have a built computer, with premiere pro cs4/cs5....so i went ahead and bought a western digitial raptor hard drive, and installed mac os x 10.6.2 snow leopard...

then i went ahead and installed color 1.5 + final cut pro 7...

my first question is, with premiere pro i can use cineform neoscene to transcode to industry standard .avi files so premiere pro can edit natively at full speed without having to render anything....and its worked great...

however premiere pro is too glitch for me....so i thought final cut would be native with the 7d files because of them being a quictime format and final cut being based on quicktime....WRONG its very slow, and EVERYTHING has to be rendered.....

so my first question is, what should i use to transcode, mpegstreamclip + pro res 422 LT? or use AVID dnXhd?

my second question is what is the BEST method to acheive the green/blue/ektochrome/bleached film effect? i mean as far as plugins....on premiere pro the newblue film effects are tremendous!

side note: i have compressor 3.5, and also soundtrack 3..

and one additional note, from what i have seen, there is NO encoded file that i have ever gotten from premiere that looks as good as this "prores 422 LT" file i just rendered, it looks better than any codec i have seen in windows....

just my 2 cents...
thanks for the help!

Use Canon's EOS plug in for FCP to transcode using Log and Transfer.

What is a "built computer?"

core i7 920 @ 3.2 ghz
gigabyte ud-5
6 gb ddr3 @ 1600 mhz
western digital rapter @ 10,000 rpms
nvidia 8800GT
mac os x 10.6.2
running "ahci"

also where is this utitlity from canon and how do i do this?

also, if i decided to upgrade to a new video card later like say the nvidia 285 gtx, would snow leopard just adjust the drivers automatically?

thanks for the help

yes it is, i am very very satisfied with how smooth it is, have to get used to it a bit but its much more stable than any windows, well other than windows 7, seeing as i have both windows 7 is very damn good for it being well, windows lol

but thanks for the help...

whats your workflow with the 7d and final cut pro?

I don't have one. I work with a HPX170

Note that there are certain hardware and software requirements for the EOS plug in, so the workflow with that isn't assured with your hardware.

I haven't used the EOS plugin yet for FCP, but haven't heard anything wrong with it.

For now I've just transcoded with either Compressor (which you should already have) or Episode.

As for the looks you're trying to go for, I'd look into Magic Bullet Looks.

Im using the EOS plugin on a Hackintosh(Quad 9650/8GB RAM/$TB StoRage/GTX 250) works like my MAC PRO...no issues.

Just because a file is QT doesn't mean that FCP edits with it. There are DOZENS of codecs that aren't editable. You need to convert to an editable codec. ProRes 422 or ProRes LT are good ones. And use the EOS Canon FCP plugin for this. It accesses the time of day code the camera recorded, and adds a reel number based on the name of the folder containing the footage you backed up from the camera. bear in mind you need the FULL CARD STRUCTURE in order for this to work. If you just backed up the QT files, then Log and Transfer won't work. Then you need to use MPEG STREAMCLIP or CLIPWRAP to convert the footage to ProRes 422 or LT.

Now, how well this will all work on a computer that isn't supported for use with FCP is the big question.
