Help with AvidDV codec

I've been trying to render out a clip from After Effects 6.0 using the Avid DV compressor but I only seem to get a gray frame with rivets.

Here's a link to a frame of the render:

I've tried using all combinations of rendering RGB,million colors, premultiplied.

The clip is exported from Avid 3.5 using the Avid DV compressor -- and that works fine, I can successfully import that clip into AE but --

Any ideas why I can't render out a clip from AE 6.0 using the same Avid DV compressor ?

As an aside ... I'm am using the upgraded codec package from Avid -- I keep getting a "cannot export bin error" when I try to export from Avid using the "same as source" + "use Avid codec". With the upgraded codec package, the Avid DV compressor shows up on the custom codec pull down menu.

I'm trying to avoid recompressing in a different codec when I re-import that clip back into Avid.

--- (pardon the cross posting on the AE forum)

Thanks !

Well, this part sounds like it could be a couple of different issues. Check this thread out, as it just came up for another user:

Regarding your AE problems, I'm afraid I haven't used AE all that much. As a workaround you could export as a Quicktime Animation at Best Quality. That would be a lossless encode so you wouldn't lose quality, then bringing it back into Avid would cause it to recompress to Avid's DV codec, so essentially you'd get the same results, just with extra steps. Maybe someone in the AE forum will know why Avid DV codec isn't working inside AE.

Thanks for the link -- I think my problems may be due my recent upgrade to the latest Quicktime (7.0 with iTunes) ---

Man! I was afraid of that happening -- I only wanted to upgrade to be able to encode h.284 -- I may switch back to QT6. I Can't afford to upgrade my Avid just yet ...

but I'll try your advice re: exporting as QT Animation from AE then having Avid re-encode upon import, dang

uggh
