HELP WITH 24P - 28:1 IMPORT

I did a search on this topic and found nothing so excuse me if this has been asked.

I have the latest version of AvidXpress Pro, and a DSR-25 deck with a firewire. The source footage was shot on the DVX-100 in 24p mode.

I have been using Avid for a long time, but this is the first time I have captured footage that was not 30fps.

I have set it for the 23.976p NTSC import, using the advanced pull down in the film settings manager(it only allows me to select advanced)... but I have two resolution choices.. DV25 411, and 28:1. From testing, 28:1 is clearly lower resolution... so can I import at that rate, and then redigitize later at the better setting later once I have a locked program?

Also this is a new set up for me, so I don't have a studio monitor yet.. even playing back the clips recorded at DV25 don't look really sharp on my computer monitor... is that a function of the monitor and this particular setting?

Any help is appreciated!!

Re: HELP WITH 24P - 28:1 IMPORT

You can recapture DV25 from a sequence that was intially captured as 28:1. That is a basic "offline" / "online" workflow. Reasons for doing this are becuase if limited disk space with lots of dailies. 28:1 will give you roughly 5 x storage than working in DV25 - so instead of getting 5 minutes per gig, you be getting closer to 28 minutes per gig.

The edit monitor is showing 1/2 frame when playing so that is not your final resolution. For the time being, you need a Mojo to output to DV from a 23.976 since it keeps the effects real time, inserts 2:3 pulldown abnd encodes back to DV25.

Michael:

Thanks for the answers.

I just discovered the output problem when testing some of the footage. Funny, when buying the system they talk about how great it is to work with 24p projects, but  never mention you can't do a digital cut without going to Symphony or Mojo.

My client is low budget... any idea what happens/technical issues if I import it as regular 30 fps NTSC and just forget the 24p mode?

My final cut pro friends swear they can import and output 24p footage shot with the same camera...

Thanks for any help!

Yes... unfortanetly it is not clear that a Mojo is needed for 23.976 back out to NTSC. But, all I can say is that it won't be that way for long. Mojo will still have additive benefits... but stay tuned...

Aside from that, you certainly can work in a 30i project with this marterial. It will have the film look as part of the original capture. If your only output is going to be DV or video then you should be fine.

It is preferred to this type of editing from material shot at NORMAL, but unless there are huge movements, the viewer should not notice any real difference between teh NORMAL or ADVAN CED>

Re: HELP WITH 24P - 28:1 IMPORT

Thanks again Michael. If you could indulge me one more question?

When importing today after changing to a 30 frame NTSC project, I noticed that I had an option of importing at 15:1s.

Again, can I assume a normal workflow of importing at lower resolution and then batch capturing at the higher res when I have a finished timeline? I have a ton of footage.

(Hopefully I can also somehow output a rough cut at 15:1s to DV for my client.)

Thanks again,

Matt

Re: HELP WITH 24P - 28:1 IMPORT

Yes, 15:1s is the equivalent offline for 30i as 28:1 is for 23.976. The issue you will still run into is that the 15:1s needs to be rendered as DV25 before being able to go back out over FireWire. But you can either recapture as needed, or transode the final seqeunce.

The Mojo is the device that allow non DV 25 material to be encoded in real time with effects back out as DV25.
