Help with 100A -> Xpress Pro project

Hey guys-

I've been offline editing for seven years on Avids but I'm embarrassed to say that frame rates, formats and even HD/SD issues are completely foreign to me. I know some aspects of finishing but I'm afraid I got a little in over my head with this project.

Here's the short of it. It's a friend's film, got into Slamdance, we're trying to get it onlined and onto Digibeta ASAP. I know that the next things I need to do aren't huge, but I've got to get them done in the right order and I need to get it right the first time. So I'm pleading for a little advice on this. (Some of these are really newb questions, sorry).

So it was shot SD on a 100A, shot in 24N, posted on an Xpress Pro 5.7 (so I dig'd into a 30i project and figured I'd 'deal with pulldown later'). So I've got a nine minute project that went into a 30i project on a 30i timeline. I know that some shots jitter on the quicktimes and DVDs I've created as screeners. I know it's because a lot of these aren't A frames and whatnot. I need to find out what the next steps are, whether it's a 'modify pulldown phase' thing, redigging in a 23.976 project, or a combination of things, etc.

I know I'm really sounding like a dumb offline idiot right now, but I really don't want to assume anything at this point. It's a nice project and it's deserving of looking its best.

Thanks.

If you edited at 30i, there should be no jitter when going out to DigiBeta as you are just laying back what was captured. Jitter occurs when you capture into a 24p native (23.976) and the "A frame is not maintained.

There are certainly advantages to native editing at 23.976, but if your deliverable is DigiBeta you should not see any jitter issues. When going to a QuickTime file, you are watching it on a progressive monitor, you will see blended frames and such which do look ratty compared to a progressive edit to start (one of the advantages of editing 23.976 native).

So, seeing as you are tight for time, what is your primary deliverable?

Michael is right that there shouldn't be any jitter if you are going to Digibeta tape which will be at 60i. To clarify, there isn't a 30i standard, but a 29.97frames per second which is also 60i (60 interlaced fields). If you have stuttery motion once on tape or viewed on a dvd on a tv then you might have some motion problems. This could be caused by doing motion effects while editing or just the viewing of a interlaced video on your computer monitor which will show all the interlaced pulldown frames.

It is usually better to edit a 24p source at native 24p if you can because it will minimize motion problems introduced in the edit and give you the most flexibility with your final product. The pulldown from the DVX100A can be removed during capture with your NLE or after capture with a program like DVFilm Maker which can also add the pulldown back in later.

It sounds like you have the project already edited at 29.97fps so you should watch it on a tape like back to the dvx100a minidv on a tv and/or off a dvd on a tv so see if the jittering is still there. Hopefully, it won't be and then it's just the pulldown showing up on a progressive monitor.

Best,
Andy
