So I have been doing some editing of some ski footage, I'm on premiere CS3, and everything looks perfect until I export. Once I open the rendered video its got all this weird stuff going on in the sky mainly, like instead of having regular gradients it is all blotchy. Does anyone know how to fix this? Here's some stills from it:

Thanks,
Trent

What format are you exporting to and which codec are you using? It's definately a compression issue.

I am exporting to .avi, I didnt use the adobe media encoder, so no compression, I just went file>export>movie. Are there any setting I can change to fix this?

Hmm wierd. So is this the same way you are always compressing? With a low data rate and trying to compress too much you will get that a lot. Thats why if you have ever compressed to .flv, or uploaded on a site that compressed to that for you (for instance when brightcove was around they did), you will get that, due to the large compression.

Heres what I do and i have gotten clear skys, cuz i used to have this problem.
Just export it with .mov H264.

No blotchy sky there.
Ha i would come over and help you out, but im in the airport going to oregon :/.

#3: That's were you're wrong. You have all kinds of choices regarding compression when using the normal exporter too. Check your settings. You're probably exporting using some old codec like Indeo or even Cinepak. You should experiment with using different codecs, to get the hang of that.

Ususally I wouldn't export to AVI at all. Quicktime comes with more and better codecs from the box, but it all depends what you want to do with the exported file. Is it a final master? Are you planning to distribute it and how?

It is all just for the web, so I usually export and then bring it into sorenson squeeze and then compress it to web size. Is there another way I should go about this? Any specific settings would be greatly appreciated.

I think the key is where on the web are you putting it? Cuz some sites will take your video and compress it again... such as like youtube and such.
And some dont, such as NS

You should do your final compression directly from Premiere if possible, thus saving a generation. For the web you should use the media encoder, and select the proper format (usually quictime or WMV).

If you need an intermediate file (like if you want to encode with MeGui into h264 or another non-integrated encoder) then export to uncompressed avi.
Avi is not a compression format, it is only a container for all different kinds of video compression. Choose uncompressed to get an intermediate file without loss of quality.
