HELP: What movie? Hidden cut scene transition

My fellow DVXUsers,

I am going crazy Googling & trying to remember what movie this came from. Here's the best description I can give:

Basically, we're in one scene and at one point we cut to a close up of the main character. We think we're in the same scene, but as the camera pulls back, we realize we're in the next scene. The color behind the character's head and the character's expression match the previous scene, so at first, the transition is invisible/hidden. Only upon the camera's pull back do we realize we're in the next scene.

Incredibly vague, I know. For awhile I was thinking the 2nd scene took place in an airplane. So the color of the seat behind the actor's head matches the previous scene. Thought it might have been Fight Club but could not find it there. I'm 90% sure it's a film I've listened to the commentary on, as I recall the director mentioning "how set design can be used to hide a cut between scenes, without the need for expensive visual effects."

If someone can figure this out, a Paypaled beer is in order!

Hmm, there may be (and I'll have to check that out again), but I don't own a copy of it so I'm pretty sure that's not the one I was thinking either. For a moment last night, I was certain the scene was from Lucky Number Slevin. There are a lot of creative scene transitions in that flick (and I know I've listened to the commentary) but I didn't find the scene with a 4x play-through.

It doesn't involve an airplane, but they use that transition a few times during the Sound of Silence scene in The Graduate. Brilliant montage.

THE GRADUATE!!! WildTrackDave, thank you. I can finally sleep at night. Ha. Wow, I forgot what a visionary Nichols is. You're absolutely right, the Sound of Silence sequence starting at 39:30 is what I was thinking of. Although that sequence doesn't take place on an airplane, the opening shot of the entire film is a CU of Hoffman with a solid white background and a zoom-out reveals that he's on an airplane. Funny how our brains mix things up.

Feel free to PM me if you're interested in that Paypaled drink! Cheers to all.
