Help! This fell out of my lens!

Hello! Sorry I'm posting this after years of quietness but I have a bit of a problem.

I have a Canon 550d and earlier on I zoomed in to something and heard a sudden rattle in the kit lens.

I took the lens off and the following fell out (see below). Everything seems to be working fine though. I can't work out what's happened. Any ideas? Help!

Cheers,

Dave

I have no idea what that is, but I'd guess that giving the name of the lens would increase the chances that someone will recognize that piece

also no idea, but it sure doesn't look like a piece from a lens... maybe it was something from the camera, or maybe a piece of something else entirely got lodged in there?

Without knowing the lens it looks like it might be a prong from a bayonet mount. Take it in to a camera shop to be sure, if you don't know what it is you'll need to anyway if you want to have it put back in.

The OP mentioned it was the kit lens.

Bizarre- I hope it wasnt something from inside the camera!

Hey all, apologies for the lack of appearances again! Busy week.

At first it seemed like there was nothing wrong, but now I've discovered that zooming in causes the outer edges to blur (like a radial motion blur) which is a bit gutting.

Starting to presume it came from inside the camera too as, well, where the hell would it go on the lens? ;)

Still don't get it though. Not sure why something like that would cause a lens to blur.

And yeah sorry, I'm not too "down wit da kidz" with the technical side of things but it's the 18-35mm lens that comes with the 550d (or t2i).

You mean 18-55mm. Hmm. Do you have access to another lens to see if this is consistent with the body versus the lens?

That my friend is a flux capacitor. You will not be able to go back to the future without it!

Seriously, it looks like it has contacts on it. I'm guessing it's from the lens, I'm looking at the same lens as we speak. Can you take your lens off the cam and see it your lens still has the little contacts on the bayonet. That whole mechanism looks like it can fall out. If not, I honestly don't know. The only other thing I can think to try is leave your mirror up and see if it looks like there's something missing from inside your camera.
