i didnt get any reply to this post over in user films so i want to run it by you hmc150 folks directly, especially cuz since that post ive been asked to go to the event referenced in this promo and shoot some more. please look at what i did last time and let me know what kinds of things i need to remember to think about. it will be at a different venue next time...an open floor convention center type of venue as opposed to the theatre this was in. no idea yet what b-roll opportunities will arise in miami beach. here is my other post:

I came to DVXUSER for the HMC150 forum and I stayed for the Premiere forum. I've been in broadcast audio for over 20 years but when I got downsized out of that I found myself in a situation where I was asked to shoot and edit an hour long documentary which involved 12 days on the road shooting over 30 hours of footage. I went to school for film production, but that was like 35 years ago, and we were actually cutting 16mm film and mag tape back then. So here I am with a brand new 150 and a week to figure out which end to look into before we started our road trip. Then I got home and bought CS5 and had to figure out how to use that. In the last 6 weeks ive put together a few vignettes that will end up in the final hour, but I was asked to do a short promo video for an event that our subject is doing in January.

So for your consideration I am posting this three and a half minute piece to get some feedback from anyone who cares to comment. I'd like to keep any snarky comments about the actual content to a minimum for the sake of this thread. All I can say about that is that this was done for a paying client who is actually THRILLED with what I have crafted here, but technically I know it could be a lot better. I have a lot to learn about the subtleties of camera operation and post-production, especially when it comes to exposure and color correction. I think the actual cutting is pretty solid, but I don't know where to start in learning how to do better.

I guess I would mostly like some advice on which areas stick out as most egregious, and some suggestions on what resources to study to make improvements. Thanks in advance for any help I can get. Without being TOO flamey, go ahead and tear this apart.

Overall nicely done. Sound is excellent as expected. Lighting isn't bad though a bit dark in places. Camera movement is good, editing moves well.

What bugged me:

1. Entirely too much zooming.
2. Too many fade to blacks.
3. PIP looks pretty chhesy. Dissolve into or partially into other source looks much better, or just let secondary audio ride over.
4. Subjects actions seem very disconnected from dialog of speakers.

I'll let others comment more.

I'm hardly a technical expert, but I agree with Perrone's points 3 & 4, although the fourth I'm not sure how much can be done about. Maybe less of the "Gazing" and more of the casual shots like when he's on the beach, etc. On the other hand, I like the fades and I'm one of the minority who loves the zoom lens, even understanding that it can be and often is over-used. At the risk of off topic digression, you mentioned having studied film 35 years ago, so perhaps you're as much of a devotee of certain 60s/70s cinema as myself, and for you the zoom brings to mind Altman or even "direct cinema" folks like the Maysles' or Allan King or Pennebaker. I found the zooms more in that spirit than, y'know, family vacation 1989. But anyway...
Nothing in there in terms of CC/Exposure levels is so far off to turn folks away, either.

Well done!
Loved the metaphor of the beacon at the end of the film. I'll second the WTF on the picture in picture scene, why? just let the voices carry the idea.
Did you shoot any extreme cu's of his eyes, seems that would be essential to the story, also. Anyway nice job.

I agree that there is WAY to much zooming. My biggest pet peeve on any video where there is an interview or such is that your subject must be well lit. None of the subjects on the one on one interview were lit at all and that really takes away from the video.

by the way....IMO this guy is creepy.....
