Help recording off the TV!..

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

Is a get away car a good idea? or should one simply run like hell and disappear into the crowd? ;)

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

Ha ha! I think with the right wheels a getaway car can be very helpful!!

No seriously guys let's stop this!!

And yes please do help me with another question. My original Q about audio. What is difference between 32k 48k and bits and all those other technical terms re audio. What do I need to know, what should I be recording in? Thanks....

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

He has a legitimate reason to copy a portion of the tape as long as its not for profit, falls under the fair use act ( don't know if they have the same rules overseas pertaining to fair use, or is using it for parody purposes.
For what he wants to do with the portion he wants to vcopy I dont think their is any copyright issues whatsoever. Broadcasters use portions of rivals shows all the time with or without permission.

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

Jez, with regard to the "recording inhibited" messaged, I've never encountered that phenomenon while dubbing tapes, though the only stuff I've dubbed from VHS to mini DV via the DVX-100 is my own material, so no worry of copy protection.

With VHS to VHS dubbing, anything encoded with macrovision causes the dub picture to roll or glitch up periodically. Sometimes, copy protection like that could be defeated by passing the signal through some sort of electronic signal processor.

I know this not because I'm some diabolical movie bootlegger, as Pookie might suspect :), but because back in high school, as part of the AV geek squad, I'd frequently be asked by teachers to copy segments of movies to another tape for teaching purposes.

As for the audio levels, when recorded in VCR mode via the DVX's analog inputs, the levels are set automatically; as far as I know, there's no way to adjust them. With regards to the sampling rate, I record everything at 48khz. 48k gives you a higher sampling rate and thus better quality audio thatn 32k.

Pookie, I understand your concerns over illegal copying of copyrighted material, but as Paul pointed out, copying for private, non-profit use is protected under the "fair use" rules. Nothing wrong with putting together a reel using copied clips, especially given there's no other way for Jez to obtain the clips. I've done a similar reel for my girlfriend, who was in a bunch of small movie roles, small enough that she couldn't easily request a clip of her scenes from the production company. No big deal.

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

in film school we made trailers from existing films. I:E, capturing from a vcr deck, I completely understand not copying a tape just to build up your dvd or vhs collection, but for a project or making a reel I seriously doubt that the FBI will be ass raping you over it. I do however agree with pookie, as far as saying keep dvxuser.com free of anything that would remotly link it to illegal talks. Do a google search and I know you'll find what your looking for, cause trust me, your probably the 1 billiionth person to attemp a tape transfer.
