Help recording off the TV!..

Hi.

Please advise. I have recently been experimenting with recording off the television straight onto miniDV with my DVX100a.

(I don't want you to think I'm trying to indulge in illegal activities so I'll tell you the reason for this. I want to get a corporate video, a short film (both on VHS) and a live TV programme onto miniDV to put into premiere and edit into a showreel for my wife, an actress.)

I have managed to do this successfully from the live TV and also from the corporate video (I live in the UK so we are talking PAL). But I have two questions:

A. When I try to record from one of the VHS tapes, the camera says "Recording Inhibited". Is there a way to 'hack' this protection?

B. When I have recorded successfully from the other sources the audio has been okay but there has been a little electronic hiss/hum that pops up every few seconds.

1. What is this?
2. Is this anything to do with the audio bit rate.
3. Whether it is or not, should I be recording off TV/video at 32K or 48K? What's the difference.
4. Is there anyway to change the audio input level that is coming in from the analogue cables? The normal buttons that control the mic inputs don't do anything - and the only other volume control on the camera seems to be the playback lcd monitor/headphone level....or am I missing something?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP

Jez

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

You want to "hack", or circumvent legitimate copy protection?

I don't think this is the best place to be asking for that information.

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

Alright then, any advice on the audio issues of the non copywrited material!?

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

EVERYTHING is copyrighted unless the copyright has lapsed.  If you didn't create it, you need permission.

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

i would think that if someone wanted a copy of something they were in that the easiest way would be to contact the people who produced it and ask for a copy.

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

If she was an actress in the production can't she just ask for 'Copy/Credit' ?

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

You're making me feel like a criminal or something, geez!
This is the whole problem. She is in a BBC programme. They sent her finally a videotape - after they said that they would send her a copy of her clip on MiniDV so she could edit intoi her showreel. It has taken 6 months just to get the tape. They are never going to send a damn MiniDV, and there's no pressure we can put on these big companies to do so. I was really hoping that someone here at DVXuser could help with what I thought was a relatively simple question. Please somebody's got to see where I'm coming from!???

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

I tried telling you, "I don't think this is the best place to be asking for that information".

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

Nothing like rocking the boat hey Jez! With some level of diplomacy I guess I'd suggest posting this in output and compression to bring the temp down. But it does seem like a tech question to me. If you've got the vhs of this are you still not able to get around the coppyright block. If they've sent it to you it would seem to me that transfer to another media shouldn't be an issue. I have beaten the copyright thing by passing through my capture card from vhs. That was copyright material but was for edit practice before I got a camera.

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

I agree with mino. I don't think what jezbond is asking contravenes any copyright laws. He has been given a legitimate copy of the material and just wants it on a different format. Just like getting production music on a CD and copying it onto you computer to edit in to your work.
Unfortunately I cant help because I don't have any good sugestions. ???

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

Well the other side is, there is always a "legitimate" reason given for the "need" to copy copyright material.

I've also lost the serial number to my copy of Avid Xpress, really, I own it, really, I just lost the number, so could you please let me have yours? You can trust me (you can trust everyone on the internet, right?), have I ever lied to you before?

Something fishy....

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

So what are we saying here we don't stop to help the guy with a flat tire because after we're done and drive away he'll drive off and rob a bank? I think giving info to jez is ok, It's not my position to guess what he's gonna do with it. If he's legit he deserves an answer IMHO

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

Our little unmentionable friend also appeared legit, at first.

Unfortunatly, you can't be sure, and as such, I prefer not to encourage, or assist in, copyright theft.

Copy protection exists for a reason.

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

Well Mino, look at it this way.

I've worked Steadicam on many films, where even I can't copy the shots I worked on off the DVD's, the studios' own the material, I was a hired operator.

If I "lift" a clip, even though I did the shot, without their written release, I'm stealing copyright material.

Is it fair...?

Absolutely.

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

I guess I just never heard of a brittish person stealing before ;)

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

Mino and Tawsy - your support has been much appreciated, thank you for voicing your opinions.

Pookie, despite everything, I respect your negative cynicism, so no hard feelings.

Re: Help recording off the TV!..

jezbond, believe it or not, it's nothing personal, I'm sure you've encountered the internet stories of woe yourself, but there's no way to differenciate the legitimate please help me, from those others.

It's very sad really, and I'll gladly help you with any other questions.
