Hi,

Ok, I am posting this here because I am in the midst of my going from canon hf100 to the hmc 150 campaign. I have a video dealer nearby who is going to give me a demo of the hmc150 as soon as I can get into the store.

Anyway, I just tried for the first time, a test of shallow depth of field with my canon hf100 and also using magic bullet quick looks. If you would like to see it, here is the link:

it seems to have uploaded ok, but not in hd...

I am asking all of you this question because I am seeing so many of you putting beautiful hd video on to vimeo. Also, you understand the avchd workflow.

I am editing in Final Cut Pro, but I can not figure out how to export so that I get a good hd video to put online. I do not want to go to compressor, I would rather just compress in FCP. Can you please give me some tips on how you are doing it?

Thanks!!

What version of FCP/FCS are you using? i know you don't want to use compressor, but the preset for AppleTV works good for vimeo!

I found a great video tutorial online for using "compressor". It made it quite simple to use, even for me and the result was great. So my question is solved, I will now export from FCP into compressor. Thanks.

~ Seems like an extra step, you should be able to find the same settings with FCP

I like 1280x720 the best for vimeo - but also use 860x484 (for smaller files). I am still impressed with the quality over SD.

I use the MP4 / 10-14mb vbr / 1280x720 for the good hd look on vimeo... In general 5-10mbs is good, 10-14 is much better - but bigger files. Watch for the crappy 1-3mbs presets, just bump them up a little.

i've found that exporting full res from final cut, then doing your compression in compressor is actually less time consuming than compressing direct from final cut, despite being an extra step. besides, it frees up final cut so you can keep working.

Vimeo have guidelines on getting flawless results with compression settings here:

http://www.vimeo.com/help/compression

Key points for HD - Size 1280 x 720, codec h.264, data rate 5000 k

Perfect every time.

Thanks all for the replies. Yes, the video tutorial did have me use those setting for vimeo and it did work very nicely - quick and with good quality. I did upload the version I compressed in "compressor", here's the link.

And I really love playing with the magic bullet quick looks. After seeing so many people here in the forum using mb looks, I had to give it a try. I did not need the full version of looks, the quick looks was plenty for my purposes.

Thanks!

5000 k all day.

I use "MPEG Streamclip" and export 1920x1080(unscaled) H.264 at 5000Kbps with AAC stereo audio at 256Kbps

1080? Might be a little overkill for vimeo...

I would rather the extra mbs go into the 720p version imo...

they will re-encode the file, so i rather give them a higher res video and let them shrink it down... so far it works good, but i do want to try new settings! don't know about 10-14 tho!

It prob works great... but technically the resolution wont 'add' much since its sucking out more video data to make up for the larger frame size... try it - the file size is still plenty small... getting about 75MB per minute of footage.

Thanks to everyone. I really think I've got the hang of it. Here is a test i did today. Going from the sdhc card, into final cut pro, an then exporting into compressor is actually a breeze. And now, with the correct settings in compressor, the video looks quite good on vimeo. Here's today's experiment.

Also, I really love this magic bullet quick looks. I just added it a few days ago to Final Cut Pro and I think it adds a whole new dimension to the feel of the video. In this video, you can see the same few clips done first with one "look" and then with another.

If you don't know about it, you can get a free trial of magic bullet quick looks on the red giant software website.

Ok...

I am having issues with FCP and getting it to export nice h.264 video... (was very happy with vegas exports)

Do I really need to export as prores then use compressor to actually get footage that looks like its 5mbs? current fcp exports at 5mbs suck real bad... I put it up to 9mbs and it still sucks just as bad...

Any tips on getting something decent right out of FCP is appreciated.
