Help Please, white balance question

Hi folks,

My new DVX100B seems to be filming blue skys with a slight pinkish tint.

Mostly I shoot on auto but when I noticed this I did a manual white balance and it didn't seem to help. I shot a little comparision video using the DVX and my PVGS250 (a smaller Panasonic 3CCD camera). I'm fairly new here but as soon as I figure out how/where to post vids I'll do so.

One thing I should mention - and I remembered this after the fact - I have a Sunpack UV filter installed on the DVX. But I'm thinking that shouldn't cause me proplems.

If anyone has any ideas concerning the cause or fix I'd appreciate any input. I'm no camera expert and I imagine I just need to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks in advance.

If your white balancing off a white substance, you should be fine. Put your chroma level and chroma phase to "0". Color temp put it at -2. See what you get there

PS- Make sure you switch Auto to Manual when you white balance, or do ANYTHING manual

make sure you are not filming with scene #2 selected, because that one will make things look pink (compensates for greenish tint of fluorescent lighting).. I was testing this today as a matter of fact... Maybe that's the problem? Look at the scene wheel above the camera / VCR button and see what it currently reads? If F2 then bingo.

Then how DO you white balance with number two?

I use f6, 24pA. So I NEVER have a problem..

mmmmmmm, 24p............:)

Thanks to you all.

The scene file is set to F1.

TheComo, I'm not familiar with the terms "Chroma Level", "Chroma Phase", or "Color Temp." Are these characteristics of the camera settings, or editing software such as Final Cut Pro? Thanks for your help. Looks like I will be learning something new.

oops...

I just reminded myself that I should read the manual before pestering others.

I just found the section in my manual on chroma level, chroma phase, and color temp. Now to check it out.

Thanks again to you all.

Gene, are you using the correct technique to manually white balance? You need a white card or gray card, put it in the light of the scene, zoom in to fill the view with it, etc...

check in the menu if your atw (auto white balance tracking is on). it probably should be off.

As this is a new camera, you may not have set the black balance before. You do that by holding the same button you set for the white balance but keep it depressed for about three seconds.

First, thanks to you all for your kind help.

1. I use the white balancing method as described by Joshua.

2. ATW is indeed OFF

3. As for black balancing, that is a new on for me. I will try that.

I posted some comparison shots using my DVX100B, PVGS250, and my Nikon digital still camera. I know it's not terribly scientific, but what I did was photograph the same frame using all three cameras set to auto. I then shot the scene again with different altered settings on the DVX (settings are indicated in the frames).

I must say at this point I am quite concered. After experimenting with COLOR

let me try this again....

After experimenting with color temp, chroma phase, and chroma level, I was never able to achieve an image that did not have a pinkish hue.

Here are the shots from the three cameras.

Have you read anything else in the manual?
Like pages 41 and 42?
