HELP PLEASE! NASTY artifacts in my footage.

Good evening, everyone,

I just had to stop a shoot early and schedule a reshoot because my AF100 was putting nasty artifacts on my footage (and to avoid using it as a crutch, I didn't take my HVX along, as this was supposed to be my AF100's first paying gig).

A sample shot can be found at http://gallery.me.com/cineclepictures/100465

The offending artifacts are inside the white boxes. The right side of the screen is blacked out to hide a spoiler - just in case anyone reading this thread is a fan of the company that employs me. (not trying to "cool guy" anyone, boss's orders).

It was shot with an Olympus 4/3 14-54mm on the Panasonic adapter. If any of you have any idea what could have caused these artifacts, please share your insights!!!

Thank you all!
Tony

I cant see the artifacts in that little movie file. (.m4v)

Obviously you were seeing something while shooting that made you decide to can the shoot. What does it look like in your edit suite on a decent monitor?

BTW- those light sources are not very film friendly and maybe the cause.

Shooter, the box on the left contains random yellow pixels and the box on the right contains random purple pixels. The light sources worked fine on an effects test shoot last week in the same environment. HOWEVER, I did add an uncorrected softbox tonight to warm up the skin tones. I never had that produce artifacts in other cameras, but maybe a bad idea with this one?

Marlon, I did not black balance. I did for the previously mentioned test shoot, but not today. Could that be the culprit?

Thanks for the feedback!

Are the artifacts visible when viewing the clips in camera ?

What editing software are you using ? Have you tried viewing the clips with other software ?

PDR, the same artifacts were visible in all shots with light backgrounds, on two different cards, on both cam monitor and 8.9" Manhattan LCD. Using FCP. Clip that I uploaded to MobileMe was rendered out of After Effects but the artifacts are visible there too.

Thanks!

holy crap...yeh i see the purple stuff on the right. On the left it just looks like floroscent flickering. I guess the light is green cuz of the floroscent. I dont have an AF100 but just wanted to confirm your not seeing things....at least on the right hand side. A higher res file would help though.

Jambredz, the stuff on the left is also visible in other shots from othe cam set-ups in which no lights are visible. I couldn't reproduce the effects at home shooting with just a room lamp. I'm wondering if it's the combination of lens and adapter (it acts wonky in other ways sometimes).

I am taking the cam, arri kit, and wife as stand in to location this weekend and shooting with the building lights off to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks for the reply!

You need to send your AF100 in for repair, I had the EXACT same problem and I have confirmed that something needed to be updated in the camera. I am still waiting to get mine back. I talked with Mr Feldman in the New Jersey office and he worked with a Japanese Panasonic engineer to deduce the problem. He didn't give me any specifics, but something had to come in from Japan for the fix. All I can say is at least you know it's the camera and nothing else in the mix. I lost a whole day of shooting as well.

Thanks, JMartin, that thread was very illuminating! My problem is pretty much exactly the same, down to it being noticeable in standby but very visible during recording. Can't wait to hear what Panasonic did for Rick.

Thanks again,
Tony
