HELP P2 thumbnails have red X!!!

We had an experienced Videographer out with an HPX 5000 and two P2 E series 64GB. When one card ran out of space the recording should have jumped to the other card. He said that after the first card was full he believed that the HPX was filming on the second card. He is 110% sure that the record light was on when he was filming. I didn’t ask about the timecode .
When I got the cards and started logging it into FCP I didn’t see any footage on the second card. I put it back in the camera and saw that all the thumbnails had red Xs on the low corner of each thumbnail.
So what happened with the footage? How can we prevent this from happening again? Finally, can any of the footage be saved?

"Repair clip" comes to mind, from memory done in the camera. others will chime in for sure, or if all else fails, read the manual.
sorry i can't help further.

Thanks for your replies!

Jason, we recorded onto the cards in the camera, then without reviewing it we put then in out Panasonic P2 deck and tried to log and transfer into FCP. On the monitor we could see the P2 card icon (No Name) but there was absolutely nothing in the log and transfer window. It was this point that we put the card back into the camera to see if the footage was there. When we did the thumbnails had all red 'X' in them. We pressed record just to see if it could and it did. We were able to record onto that same P2 no problem.

Tom, if I run "repair clips" is there a chance it will actually delete the footage?

Make a copy of the card to a hard drive and see what you get. The only time I have ever seen something like this was when we were copying footage and the transfer was stopped in the middle. It wrote just enough info to have the p2 card structure and the thumbnails but no video or audio. I don't know what would cause this in camera.

Hi Ihdor, this will explain, from panas site---hope you have the yellow background, Your cam op may shed some light on what happened and try to avoid it happening again...

X – This indicator means that there’s something wrong with your clip. If the “X” appears with a yellow background, you can usually repair the clip (using the “Repair Clip” function in the P2 Thumbnail menu). Usually this X will show up if you eject a P2 card while that card is being recorded to or if the power goes off (battery dies or AC power goes out) while recording. The P2 system is prepared for such issues and automatically saves the recorded files every two seconds, so if an interruption does occur you will usually only lose a few frames (up to the last two seconds). However, if you see a red X, that clip is damaged beyond repair and should be deleted.

or a real world experience--

From memory some years ago (in the SPX800) I had a camera battery's "Inteligent circuit" fail and the last clip I had recorded was all fuz/noise, I just put another battery on, hit record and the next clip was good, so I deleted that faulty clip in camera and went on recording. these P2 cams are tough and well built, usually it's another problem that causes issues, even in the old days of tape a power malfunction could chew up a tape at that point of issue.

Goodluck, and if all is lost just go back and re shoot it, or move forward with some creative editing to replace what you've lost.
and, make sure your HPX has the current firmware to use the E series card.

Enjoy

Drivesavers.com does data recovery on p2 cards. It will likely be a few thousand dollars but depending on the cost of a re-shoot it could be worth it. They just did a terabyte for me and it was about 6K.
