Help - P2 importing Error in FCP

Hey guys, I was hoping someone could help me out with this problem. Today I shot some footage on 720 24pn...and I'm having issues importing the p2 into FCP. Any footage I have that is above 34 seconds in length, the P2 transferring progress bar doesn't change... and after about 5 seconds it stops trying to transfer and says the clip is qued. Then in the status bar, where the qued clips are placed in the bottom area of the P2 panasonic import section, a Red Octagon with a white exclamation mark appears. When I put my cursor over this symbol, a message pops up describing the problem saying...

Error: No Data

Meanwhile there is data...because I'm able to view the footage, and import it in Standard Def via the log and capture mode in FCP.

I know that this isn't an issue with FCP or the computers I'm using, because I tried to import the footage on two different computers, both of which have succesfully uploaded p2 footage in the past. I'm thinking it's either a problem with the card or the camera, most likely the p2 card.

Has anyone had this same problem occur? Or does anyone know about this problem I'm talking about. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I plan on calling the dealer I bought this from and Panasonic early in the week to see what I should do about getting this fixed (I still have 8 months warranty on it), but, I'd appreciate it if I knew more information about the problem before calling in so I don't get the run around from the people I call.

Thanks in advance for your help.

We have been seeing this in FCP 5.1.2 (and I have experienced it personally).

One option is to remove all of the XML files from the contents folder except for the problematic clip.

Unfortunately, what worked for me was using FCP 5.1.1, which I still had around on a backup of my system executed prior to 5.1.2 upgrade, and I was able to import the problematic clips.

So, some specs would really be useful here--

Was this indeed FCP 5.1.2?
Is this a spanned clip?
Were you importing directly from the P2 card and or had you copied the contents of the P2 card to your media drive.

It is not your P2 card. The problem is in FCP and quite possibly even in Apple's P2 driver.

Search is your friend. This has been reported several times on this board.

hey sorry...yea I remeber coming across it in friends and seeing that people were having problems with 5.1.2 but I thought maybe it was a p2 card problem instead. Yes it is Final Cut 5.1.2, no it's not a spanned clip, and in terms of importing...I tried directly from a p2 card by putting it in the pci card slot in my powerbook...and also tried on my imac by importing the p2 contents on my desktop via firewire, and then importing the p2 into final cut. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

When you have the the P2 window open, open the preferences. Then turn off the "remove extra frames" button. Seems like the import P2 function gets messed up when trying to import native 24p stuff with this option turned on. Make sure you put it back on when importing non-native footage.

Actually, with some of my problematic clips, checking the remove duplicate frames allowed FCP to import the clip without the dread red exclamation point-- but the audio scrambled at the beginning of the clip and then disappeared.

Apple routinely recommends P2 Log (or HD Log) for problematic clips :-)

Can't guarentee anything since the source of the problem sounds elusive, but it's worth a try.
