Help P2/FCP problem!

On a recent job I had a Panasonic HVX200 set up with a 64GB P2 card running continuously as an overall shot.

I used P2CMS to download all of the footage from the cards to an external HFS+ formated drive via an Intel Macbook Pro.

I turned over the drive to the client and now the editor is having a problem with a clip from that camera, the most important one of course. I don't have any editing software at the moment so I can't test anything out with the backup drive I have.

The clip is about 1:42 long, recorded on one card in 720/30PN. When the editor brings the clip into FCP only about half of the clip can be brought in. The last half of the clip is missing and has the most important footage. He's tried both log and transfer and file import.

The entire clip is viewable in P2CMS and according to Jan Crittenden if the clip is fully viewable in P2CMS then there's nothing wrong with the clip and the problem lies with FCP.

I have a few questions for the editor.

1. What version of FCP?
2. Did he have this trouble with the other P2 clips from that card?
3. Has he tried trashing preferences and then opening a new project to see if it will import then?

FCP 6.05

No, but this was the only clip of that length that they picked. I suggested they test some of the other ones, but they were renting an editing suite and it wasn't cost effective. They put in a place holder clip for now and are going back in to finish next week.

3. Has he tried trashing preferences and then opening a new project to see if it will import then?

Yes several times

Just got off the phone with the editor.

I had suggested that he try to export the clip from P2CMS and after a 5 hour export he ended up with 11 separate files which he was able to successfully import.

I posted on CreativeCow as well and received a suggestion to turn off the "remove duplicate frames" option in the L&T preferences.

He's going to try that out as exporting these long clips via P2CMS takes so much time.

If that works I'll report back, if not I have to look for another solution as we're going to be doing a lot more of this work as a 5 hour export of just one 1:42 clip is ridiculously long.

The remove duplicate frames checkbox should be unchecked in the L/T preferences drop down for any pNative transfers.

But that would affect all the clips, not just some.

And am I correct in understanding that the card was write protected when you mounted it to transfer the files?

I don't know if the remove duplicate frames checkbox was checked or not, I wasn't there when they were trying to import the clip. I'm just trying to deal with the freaked out phone calls.

The cards weren't write protected as far as I remember.

This particular clip was shot with just one card in the camera, so it's not a case of the clip being spanned across two cards.

As I said in the post above, he managed to export the clip from P2CMS and import the resulting 11 separate clips which contain the full footage into FCP, but it took 5 hours to do the export.

Now we're just trying to figure out what the problem might be as we'll have a lot more of these to do and having to go through this every time will put a serious dent in the workflow.
