Help on how much to charge?

So my business partner and i are stepping out from doing weddings some now and we are doing our first package deal. Good sized business. We are putting together 2 different 30 second commercial for the store, doing the video for the outdoor video marquee and doing roughly 18 product shots for videos throughout the store. Some will be photographs and some will be looping videos. All will require editing of course. So ball park what would some of you guys charge for something like this?

I charge $1,800.00 for a standard 30 Sec Ad. (that is a very low end Ad by the way).

How I get to that cost is I bill in for a 4 hour shoot = $600.00
4 hour edit = $500.00
Music Lic. = $200.00
Sound Kit = $300.00
Legal = $200.00

If it requires special music that may require more $$, price goes up substantially. This price usually has the client featured as the talking head or narrator. Having pro actors stand in & the price goes way up.

Most of my clients have thier own idea for the Ad so there is no charge for script time. If that is not the case, again, the price goes up.

Definitely research local rates and amount of work that need to be done. Definitely depending on what they will dwiththe finished product!

dprpunk's business partner here...

So basically, the guy is looking for this:

--THREE, 30 second ads. (one that's kind of a "coming soon" ad, and two to be made after the store is complete).

--18+ "featured product" video/demonstrations to go around different "featured" areas of his store on small flatscreens. Looping videos...

--A video for his big jumbotron sign outside.

He showed us his previous commercials done by another company...I've seen used car commercials of a higher caliber. There's no question that we can deliver a product worlds better than what he had before...This is going to be a rather ambitious (and fun) project, and it should pay well too.

He's also pretty well connected to other business owners looking for the same type of stuff. Hopefully this leads to other jobs...

My main concern, now, is not so much what to charge, but where to go to seek legal advice, have contracts drawn up for us to use, etc. Apparently, this store receives products that have yet to be marketed to the rest of the US, and the companies are looking for marketing videos (see: stuff like that "sham wow!" scum does..demo videos and the like)...so it's a possibility by being affiliated with this store as well, we may have our foot in that door.

Very excited, but we're still in the early stages of everything, so anything could happen at this point. We're staying grounded about the whole thing.

" lol that site reminds me of like 1998 or something. same with the demo reel haha "

I don't post home made music videos on Youtube like you blackdogs377.

Sorry I don't meet up to your standards but hey, I'm getting paid.

Maybe you would get paid too if you invested in some lighting, stablization, audio & training. I have my own clients that are very pleased with the work I do, thats why they come back & keep paying.

Why don't you show us some more of your work, or maybe a link to your Website?

I think the answer to that is obvious, I'm in business & your not.

I hardly see how someone who takes homemade footage shots of his dogs & uploads it to youtube can seriously critique the work of a video production company that has been in business for two years.

Seriously, a few months ago you were looking to invest a $100 bucks in a tripod?

Good luck

I drew up a contract & had a lawyer go over to take out & add to and then just modified other versions to suit a particular client.

On some jobs I have done I put insurance coverage on that particular job. It's expensive but much worth the piece of mind that comes with it.

That "Sham Wow" Ad is a goldmine. I am currently working through a deal for a national Ad that has been in the works for some time now. The client's air time is very expensive & the hoops to jump for that type of Ad far outway any standard red tape. It is worth it though because you are dealing with a longer run time.
