Help on a no laptop portable HD

I'm sorry if issue has already been discussed here. I was not able to find posts to the effect. I am looking for a battery powered Hard Disk system that I can carry along with my DVX for direct recording into the HD, unattached to a laptop or computer, that I can later download to a desktop.
Is there such an animal?
If the matter has been discussed already, could you send me links?

Your answers will be appreciated, even condescending ones.

Thanks

Ipod, a crazy? thought for tapeless recording

Ipod, a crazy? thought for tapeless recording

Ipods come now with up to 60 GB of HD storage at $ ± 400. Being a potable HD, it may serve for the purpose of tapeless recording. Has anybody succesfully tried that route?

Aargh, the old iPod question...

Anyway, you can't just cable up any HD to your camera. It also requires specialized software/firmware (and a processor to run it on) to actually do the capture. That's why products like the FireStore are costlier than regular HDs. You can also use a laptop with capture software (Final Cut Pro on the Mac side and DVRack on the PC side seem the favorites for this).

The FS-4 sounds awsome. Now is it possible to unload your footage onto another external HDD without having to mount the FS-4 onto a computer? That way, for long trips one can carry around the FS-4 plus an external HDD without having to lug about a laptop. Thanks!

Yeah, I don't think that'd work either... but, IINM, two Firestore FS-4's can be daisy-chained together for longer record times, so maybe there's some sort of provision for that. That would be most interesting, if it were possible...

Thanks! I didnt think so, but it was just a crazy thought. I guess Ill have to take my laptop along then!

While this would be impractical/impossible to do with the stock Ipod (because the Ipod firmware source is not available, at least not to normal people) I believe this could be accomplished using Linux on the Ipod. Linux does have support for DV capture, and I have looked into the possiblity of porting this software, and it might not be that big of a deal.

The only thing that is special about a FireStore -vs- and Ipod is that it knows how to act as a DV device.

I have read in another DV site (http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=41177) a post from a guy that is experimenting with an HD and Linux software. I don't know anything about programming, but I insist that an Ipod is a portable HD, about $400 less than Firestore or similar. All it takes is one of you geniuses figuring out the firmware/software.
Barry Green mentions, by name, somewhere, either in his book or in one of the threads here, (I can't remebere where, in an attack of my German friend, Dr. Alzheimer) about some form of tapeless storage. Maybe, if he reads this, he could refresh my memory.
In my modest opinion the quest goes on.

? I'm not sure I know what you're referring to.

Tapeless storage that I'm familiar with is P2, XDCAM, Serious Magic's DV Rack/HDV Rack, and of course the FireStore. Was it one of those?

I think you were referring to some kind of mass storage, like HDs, some specific brands. The ones above do not seem to ring a bell. No need for you to go any further. I'll review the threads and re-read your book.

Nnovia=nightmare

Nnovia=nightmare

This post is for anyone who is looking into buying a hard disk recorder that plugs directly into cameras. I purchased three from Nnovia while working on a job this summer and had nothing but problems. The firewire port can be rendered useless with as little as a jiggle. These absolutely can not be used in a handheld environment.

What's more their customer service is appalling and their accounting is shoddy. It took them 5 weeks to return $1000 deposit they claimed they didn't have until I proffered the credit card receipt.

I don't know if Firestore or other competitor models are useful tools, and I'd be glad to hear of any info on them, but for your own sake, stay away from Nnovia.
