GH3 Help! Noisy video at ISO1000-ISO1600

So what I have there is normal? That's pretty nasty at ISO1600 ey.

Furthermore, -5 and +5, seems like there isn't a difference...

I tend to keep to ISO 800, I've seen noise creep in at 1600, although not as much as the GH2.

I did a controlled low light test (as opposed to being on the street) here, where I kept at ISO 400 throughout at 100 shutter speed:

I'd guess I was about F1.2 as I wasn't quite wide open for most, I'd imagine I'd have got away at F1.4 without an ISO increase or increasing the lighting.

And here it is at Natural -4 -4 -1 +5

Notice the shadows are extremely noisy.

Am I missing something here?

I shot this in 25p, 50 frames per second. All-I (72mbps)

*Scratches head......

Your scene of what presumes to be of your knee under a table has noise due to lack of light, furthermore your image looks more than fine. You should try shooting a real project before you complain about a scene that honestly makes no sense.

An underexpose scene can introduce noise, just like an overexpose scene will clip and wash your image out. Has nothing to do with the camera, this is something that affects all digital systems. If you want to avoid all noise then you need proper exposure in your shot, worst case scenario use a denoiser software.

J.F.R, apologies for not uploading a proper clip.

I actually shoot for the multimedia team of a newspaper in a tiny country in Southeast Asia.

I was previously on the Canon 6D, but decided to jump ship.

Below is another clip that has gone live on our site because I was the only one filming the other day.

I thought it was noiser than normal.

Thanks for your suggestion on a de-noiser, but we are trying not to use any of that in our workflow.

Here is a simple newscast with the GH3 with proper lights at ISO640: http://www.bt.com.bn/bookmarks/2013/03/18/brunei-times-daily-newscast-march-18-2013 I found the shadows a bit noisier than I liked them to me.

Currently the parliament is on-going so that's all I'm filming: Here is the GH3 with a mini LED light, I still think there is noise at ISO1250 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=XCZftLGG1Ps

Here is the 6D at ISO1250-1600 which I felt was cleaner - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=dSr5l5pcbGQ

Make no mistake, I am not trying to compare Apples and Oranges.

I just want to be sure that I've got my settings right as this is the first time I've had any other camera than a Canon in the past 7 years.

canon 6D is the most recent Full frame model …. what do you expect ?
they have almost 2 stops difference in low light, this is normal.

If you want better results , you have to use some very bright lenses , like pany 25mm 1.4 or better SLR magic .95 etc.

The 6D looks crushed in the blacks. The GH3 is getting more detail in deep shadow, with that comes a bit of noise. Doesn't look that objectionable to me. But tastes vary when it comes to noise/grain.

All-I (72mbps) is very noisy. Use IPB 50mbps. I found this in my own tests and its generally been corroborated.
+1 This is the advice I've heard time and again on various forums, well not necessarily specifically that it's noisy but that the All-I doesn't perform that well.

If you don't use a de-noiser then you have to live with a certain amount of image noise at higher ISO settings. ( I alway include a de-noiser step for any footage shot at 1600 ISO or higher )

As I said before, I am not trying to compare apples and oranges. I know the 6D has a good 3-4 stops on the GH3.

I just want to know whether or not I'm doing something wrong to the GH3.

As mentioned in my previous post this guy's high ISO looks way better than mine in a dimmer setting:

Also, compared to this guy at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4o1Lk7boqE

@ ISO1600-2500 on the 14-42mm lens. I have a pretty crappy clip....

I didn't process in post, but still.........

Btw, thanks for the many responses. I will use IPB tomorrow instead of All-I.

I will also be trying the 20mm 1.7, instead of the 12-25 2.8.

My main tele lens is a Canon 70-200 f4.

Does anyone know if you can set ISO at varying intervals - 150 - 300 - 500 etc? I think you can in stills mode but in video I think you are limted to 200-400-etc.

The 20mm pancake is good in low light, sharp, the only slight downside is the auto focus is slower than other Lumix lenses, you should certainly give it a try.

I was trying that to no avail. Only in stills. I actually am out in the sun often so ISO125 would be nice...

I will definitely give that a try today.

However with that said, stills at 4:3 appear to far less noisier than video. It could just be my eyes though..
