Help needed matching GH1 footage & Canon 5D footage on a multi cam shoot.

Hi there,

I'm hiring in 3 x 5D's for a multi camera shoot and using my GH1 as a forth camera.

I have limited time to test 'Film mode / Picture profile' settings between the two, but want to match the looks as closely as possible in camera...

What do people recommend?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
Jon

I'm very curious about this, too.

Also, after matching as closely in possible in-camera, do you find that additional color correction is still necessary to get them to match? If so, what steps (gamma, etc.) are recommended?

In my experience, the built in color grading tool in Final Cut is a wonderfully simple and effective tool, I would say as long as you can get it close, you should be able to correct the GH1 very closely to the 5D footage. That also assumes you are using FCP :-)

Canon - 'neutral' profile - sharpening off, contrast all the way down, -2 saturation
GH1 - nostalgic profile, contrast -2, noise reduction -2

The canon might be slightly less 'warm' than the GH1 but you'll be close enough

The nice thing about Canon DSLRs is that they have customizable picture style curves, so if you wanted to you could actually match the luminance response of the 5D to the GH1. I've done this with my 7D to match other cameras. You just shoot over/under greyscale charts with the GH1 with the settings you want to match and then shoot the same thing with the 5D using a base picture style you'll base yours on, and then match the clip points and every stop down from there. Color may still need a little tweaking in post since the color options in Canon Picture Style editor are terrible, but you'll likely be amazed how similar the images will look if this is done correctly. Too bad more cameras dont have what are basically customizable LUTs like Canon and Nikon DSLRs have.
