Help needed, digital zoom

Can anybody explain digital zoom on the movie mode ?
This is very important to me to decide whether to buy the camera or not!

On picture mode a digital zoom is probably a crop and then a resize of the processed (or maybe the pre-processed picture) , so instead of getting a 12M picture you get 6M or 3M resized.

But what about applying digital zoom on the motion picture mode ?

Remember that (read the specs) there are 10.5M pixels available for the 16:9 video,
to output about 1M pixels of video at 720p.

Does it mean...
1. Using only the center part of the sensor, like 5.25M pixels available...
2. Cropping each frame before processing ,still 5.25M pixels available.
3. Cropping the processed matterial. (doesn't make sense , because will require alot off proccesing power).

Or somthing else ?

This is an extra feature on the camera, not something that should make or break your decision on buying it. If you need to shoot a lot of telephoto stuff, then just buy longer lenses.

There is a thread in the footage section, with some comparison shots using the digital zoom function.

to clarify,
I will use a canon 150-600/5.6,
But still I am using now a canon xl camera with effective range of 1500mm-3000mm...
I asume, but still can't confirm, that using the 2X crop (digital zoom) will still live me with a proper footage ?

Don't have a ton of experience, but have never seen a digital zoom that didn't degrade the PQ. Agree with everyone else, just use the proper lens.

3000mm, and you still want to increase your zoom? holy crap, i'd say that's total overkill but who am i to say. digital zoom sucks, and is to be avoided at all costs, like adrian said it's just a "bell and whistle" kind of thing that gets thrown in to the specs so people who don't know better will say "well the GH1 has all these features for such a low price!". even if you're camera doesn't have digital zoom you can still do it with your NLE, as far as i could tell the camera doesn't compensate by adjusting the image after zooming in digitally. if you have a lens that is equivalent to 3000mm... ya know what? screw it, i'll go shoot an example of the digital zoom (with the kit lens) right now and upload it to the footage/screen grabs section, gimme a few...

from my understanding the 2x crop factor does not degrade image based on others who've posted here as well as with the previous G1 but if someone can verify with kit lens as well as non kit lens that would be great..

Ok here is the deal based on what I have read here. Even though the sensor is, of course, larger than 720 or 1080, it must use the whole sensor to output this image, you can still use digital zoom but YOU WILL LOSE QUALITY of you digital zoom during video...put another way: even though the sensor is larger than the video size, the camera DOES NOT allow you to shoot using only a smaller part of the sensor, during video, to get a "more zoomed in" image and smaller FOV, without losing the same quality that you would expect from any other digital zoom.

This is just from what I've read here in the many other threads about this, haven't personally confirmed, but I have seen the footage.

and there we go. i have a 1080p video test ready to upload to vimeo but for some reason i'm using the exact same output settings as i have before only now vimeo won't detect them?
