i got dvx100 from uni and start shoot on 2 project. on all the shoot it turn out to be our of focus event i for the focus right (it loog right n th elcd and with tape) and all the shoot look like mudy (like a fog in front of camera event it bright light).
below is setting:
detail:-5
chroma:+max
MP=-10

is it because the detail level to low that make th epicture blury ? as i read and watch Barry's book said soemhtign shouldnt set it to -7 or +7 .should i leave it at 0 ?

my whole week shoot was all blurry :cry:

Detail -5 would indeed make the footage look somewhat soft. It's not necessarily "out of focus", but at -5 you're turning off all edge enhancement, so it would look soft as compared to most regular video.

However, assuming that you actually did have the footage in focus, if the only thing that's blurry is because of the detail level, then that's something you can "fix" in post -- edge enhancement/sharpening can easily be added in post. Can't be taken away, really, but it can be added.

You made sure to focus the viewfinder, right? The viewfinder has a diopter adjustment -- you should make sure the viewfinder is focused so that the readouts/displays (like the time code and battery, etc) are all as razor-sharp as possible.

But if the footage looked good and sharp in the LCD, then it's possible that it's just the low detail level that has you concerned. If you watch the DVX DVD and watch the difference between -7 and +7, you'll see that the -7 footage looks very blurry as compared to the overly-sharpened +7. -5 is pretty low. It looks like edge enhancement starts creeping in at around -5 or -4, but that's not always all bad -- as long as it's not excessive, and it's kept in context with the viewing environment, some edge enhancement will make the footage look sharper (Sony's FX1/Z1 cameras set their default edge enhancement to +12 on a scale of 0-15!) The amount of edge enhancement you want also depends on how big you're going to blow up your footage -- the bigger you display it, the less edge enhancement/"detail" you want. Nancy Schreiber shot the whole movie "November" at detail setting -7, because she knew she was going to blow it up to 35mm film. I imagine for the DVD release they probably went in and added a little sharpness back in.

thx barry
