help... my first film help!!

hello guys here is what I think would be a dumb question but I have to admit that this site is great I have learned more stuff in a week than what I knew about vd all my life, but here is the question, see I have everything ready for my first film, lights, dvx100b, vegas 6, laptop with 2gigs of ram and dual processors, mic and the whole 9, the only thing that I need is a external hard drive, the problem is that everyone says that I should buy a hard drive that has firewire, the problem is that my laptop only has one firewire port and 4 usb ports, what am I to do? please help me understand how is it that editing works, laptop has to be firewired to the dvx right? and the hard drive has to be firewired to the laptop as well? is that how it works, please tell me what to do, thanks guys once again
 
If you have a laptop with a PCMCIA card slot, you can get a card to add more firewire ports. A lot of external FW drives will have two ports for daisy chaining additional drives, but I don't know if you could plug the camera into the second port there. Anyone have experience trying this?
