Help...my first edit with HDV!!

I have a guy who wants me to edit some footage shot on HDV. I currently use a dual 1.8 Macintosh with Final Cut Pro 5. From what I understand, I can load the footage up easily and edit in FCP without a problem...the areas that I'm hearing differences are being able to monitor the footage.

I currently use a dual monitor setup and have a Gateway 30" HD preview monitor, but one source told me that I might NOT be able to preview the footage.

My question: Is there anyone that has my setup and what are you using to preview your footage?

Epp,

a bunch of ways--and this goes for all HD formats, not just HDV and not just using an HD deck. First there's Digital Cinema Desktop which allows you to utilize the 2nd display as a monitor. Also, keep your DV (or HDV or whatever) deck connected via FW and you can scrub and send out HD to your broadcast monitor as an SD signal. You CANNOT send out in real-time HD unless you have an HD deck or a Decklink or AJA, etc. However, you can send out a signal (uncompressed, HDV, HD, DVCProHD, whatever) out the old FW as frames....meaning you can scrub in SD and you can look over frames in SD out to the broadcast monitor in a pinch. Of course, going with an AJA or Decklink via HD-SDI to your broadcast monitor is the way, but sans those, you can utilize Digital Cinema Desktop to playback any codec in real-time given Dynamic RT and your setup, and you can--at least--send out a signal to a broadcast monitor in SD to gauge what you've got.

Hope that makes sense.
