Help moi - Canon 28-135 or tamron/sigma 28-300

Hi guys. I had another topic on cinema5d and had decided on getting a superzoom lens to accompany my 28mm and 85mm 1.8's. Now, I am really liking the Canon 28-135 IS. So I am inclined to get that lens. I read the whole thread about that lens but I am still a little unclear on the IS. If you have this lens:

1) how good/usable is the IS?
2) Is the range enough for you?
3) How do you like the lens overall?

My other options are these lenses:

a) the Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 for $300
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/3 ... DG_IF.html

b) the tamron 28-200mm f/3.8-5.6 for $280
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/4 ... _Zoom.html

c) the tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 for $390
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/3 ... to_AF.html

And then there is this next lens, the only one that really stands out to me as a contender for my money. It is basically an IS version of c) right above. The problem is it is I really can't afford it (but I could make it happen if need be), AND I am not quite sure I would in fact like it more than the canon 28-135.

d) tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 VC (IS) for $580

So PLEASE help me out. In a way this is a two part thread. I have almost made up my mind on the canon and it can be found for under $300 almost new apparently. So, how do you like it etc (the three q's above). And then I was just wondering some of the same things about those four lenses I listed if you have one or happen to know about it. I am most interested in the tamron with VC but if it is not exceptional I am reluctant.

- Jackson.

Sorry if that thread is a bit muddled.

I am not sure about the other lenses, but the 28-135 is just an ok lens. Its a kit lens that came with my 5D and I did a steadicam merlin test with it which had ok results. http://www.vimeo.com/5105468
It was relatively good in the 50-85 mm area and as expected not so good at 28 and 135. It also is pretty much a daytime or very good light lens for video and had some sharpness lacking throughout.
Personally there are better cheap primes out there that are far better then a cheap zoom. If you want a zoom you should get something decent ( 24-70, 24-105 etc ) or you are just throwing your money away:)

Thanks. I already have some primes and I wanted a zoom now. I want something with more range than the two zooms you listed, and also something cheaper. So I wish there was a decent, cheap, zoom with a nice range. If you think the 28-135 is crappy than the 28-300's that I listed must suck. But some people like them. Maybe you are being picky? No offense, I just want to understand and I have heard some pretty good (not excellent) reviews of this lens. How do you like the IS? Anybody else? I think I will actually wait and get the lens with the 7d now that I think about it. I didn't realize until now that that is the kit lens it comes with. Hmmm.

But yeah, anybody else like to chime in?

I wouldn't say its crappy, but compared to the 24-105 f4L and the 24-70 f2.8L ... it isn't that good. The IS on it was actually one of the best things, I found. I am picky I guess sorry, hehe . Well after getting some real nice glass it really is hard to justify the cheaper stuff... but hey its just part of the whole equation and the 28-135 can tell a story just as good as the 24-70 . :)

Thanks Brad. I feel good about getting the lens now actually, since I will get it cheaply with the 7d body. But for now I am freaking out because I need something with macro ability and preferably zooming capabilities to go along with my 28 and 85 which have horrible min focusing distances. So yeah. Still trying to figure that out before my short.
