Help Me!

Everything I render from my hd100 comes out looking either very soft or comes out as orange static. I'm using final cut. Whats it going wrong? Is it something to do with how the footage was encoded on the tape or is it my computer?

Slow down, buddy. We need some more details, here. Does your tape play back properly in the viewfinder/LCD on the camera? How about on an external display?

What project and capture settings are you using in FC? Did you record your footage at 24p? If you're trying to capture 24p in FC, you're going to need a 3rd party plugin like Lumiere to pull it off.

I am capturing in 24p. the footage looks great when playing it back through the camera. I'm only shooting in dv mode, 16:9, nothing else is really special about it. I lay the footage into a 23.98fps timeline. It all looks fine until I render it. Then it takes on the properties I described in my earlier post. The footage plays back fine in the VLC player as well as Mpegstreamclip. does anyone know whats causing this?

Was your DV footage shot at 24p or 24p advanced?

OK- my FCP experience is very limited, but I do know that interpolating 24pa footage at 23.98 instead of 23.976 will soften it up in After Effects. I know it seems like a slight thing- but it can make a difference. Can you change your project settings to reflect a 23.976 frame rate and see if that sharpens everything back up again?

It will allow me to put in 23.976 in the advanced quicktime video settings but the sequence still remains at 23.98.

Hmmm.... We have a FCP workstation here in the bldg in another dept.. Let me see if I can figure something out for you. Gimme' a few minutes.

OK- scratch the 23.98 vs. 23.976 thing- apparently FCP's presets are all built around 23.98 timing, so it's a mute point.

What capture preset did you use when you offloaded your footage? Did you use the "DV - NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal" preset, or the straight 23.98 preset without the pulldown removal? This is important, because the latter won't remove the flagged frames from your footage during capture, it just assumes the footage is already conformed to 23.98.

Wow- well, it appears you're doing everything by the book. If this were an Avid or Premier question, I could be a lot more help, but we're already operating at the periphery of what I know about FCP.

You might try and seek help on the FCP forum here: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=939

Someone's bound to have had a similar experience with this.

Sorry I couldn't help you out...
