Help me survive Superbowl Week!

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

I live in jax too thartley and my choice is "being out of town" :)

I'm gonna be in atlanta the Whoooooole time.

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

Congratulations to you, Lucidz! For peace and quiet, I will need a sensory deprivation tank around here, I think.

Not real interested in filming this stuff. Me and the partying masses do not get along. Although the girl who sits next to me at work is thinking about paying the $100 to get into P. Diddy's party. I did a doc on karaoke bars a while back and had my fill of getting drunk people to sign releases. ha! Never been in a bar in my life until then, and I seemed to hit every one within a 20 mile stretch (trust me, there's a ton).

And its not the PGA that we do...its the TPC. But its golf no matter how you look at it. >:(

Well, I will keep my little sony cybershot in the car with me, just in case. ;D

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

I can sort of understand what you're going through, though my situation is on a much smaller scale than the Super Bowl.

I live in Mankato, Minnesota. It's a town of roughly 50,000 people. Every fall, the Minnesota Vikings have there training camp here, and every fall, the town is flooded with idiots (even idiots that aren't actual members of the Vikings).

So what ends up happening is this:
1. A lot of people end up driving the wrong way down one-way streets.
2. Vikings players (and people who pretend to be Vikings players) and coaches are in the bars being assholes and trying to pick up women (sometimes literally), and getting DWIs (and/or driving into buildings).
3. Everyone wears purple.
4. It makes for good video. ;D

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

You're right Jim. I should be more careful in my judgements. I honestly try, but watching these guys can be depressing for me (it just makes me wonder "why?").

Yep, already I have seen a limo run a red light to cross three lanes of traffic in order to pull into a shopping mall. :-/

I mean, Florida already has a high percentage of people who think its normal to do that (i.e. the very aged, licensed drivers) we dont need anymore. ;D

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

"Why" is such a little word that just does not work in this case. The scariest thing about Parris Hilton is she has taken celebrity to another level. She is famous for being famous. Get your head around that. If the whole celebirty thing did not freak you out before, that certainly has too.
There are way too many empty souls out there that just need fullfilment. And the way our society embraces these folks right now gives them a glimmer of hope that just being near these folks will make them special as well. It is sad and disheartning.
Peoples eyes light up for the mere glimps of someone famous. They wait for hours, just to say they saw them. Reality just is not what it could be.

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

The sad part to me is that we have somehow addopted this idea of rich and famous as a target to shoot for in life. Got to get there some way some how and who cares how , just get there, generally speaking. Seems to me that rich and famous is what MIGHT happen to you if you are really at the top of your game in a craft that you are totally passionate about. What is Paris Hiltons craft...I know some of it has been posted in some grotty places on the net but hell. Are our lives so empty and dull that we really need these cellebs to make us complete? I think we need to sit back a bit and take stock of our values because they are on a slimy fast paced track headed for a town I don't think any of us can practicly live in.

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

Totally. Hilton has done nothing. Ever! Her only claim to fame is she was born into a rich family. Big deal. It would help if she had some sort of personality, but she is as entertaining as a coffee table. Less. Not to mention, she has complete contempt for people - That is even more reason she should not be worth watching. It's not like she is super hot either - Throw a beer bottle in a bar and you will hit 4 girls way better looking. (They will naturally be pissed off at you though ;) )

Don't remind me...

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

It freaks me out how many people pay attention to these shows on TV like...Like....**** what's it called...Oh yes Entertaiment tonight. We get a live feed of Tom cruise buying a pack of gum or discover cher had a bad pimple popped on her snout or that Madonna admits to lesbian dreams....Who freaking cares! I want only to watch maybe shows that concentrate on how the work these people do is realized...How was it filmed? what method did they use to nail the role...About their professional lives I am interested, what they had for breakfast and where they shop has no place in my life.

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

One more bit then I'm done....I think of it this way. Let's say I roll out a film in the future and it rocks the universe, I know who I am and what I am and the fact that I've done something amazing with my talent will not change that. So for people to scratch each other to death to catch a glimpse of me is totally insane. Live with me for a month and see if you think I'm worth your nutbar devotion. If you can't separate the work I've produced from me then you are in big need of counseling. You could try and touch my robe till the proverbial cows come home but you are still gonna get up in the morning with the same medical malfunctions you went to bed with. If anything the problem you have would get worse!

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

Understood mino. I will stop watching you from my car through the window and go home. I'm sorry.  :-[

     ;)

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

I agree completely with you mino.

Why" is such a little word that just does not work in this case.

Let me be more clear:

I don't mean "why are these people famous"? Rather "why do we as a society give a crap?" Are we that shallow and insecure? The only answer is yes which is really quite scary to me.

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

Be afraid Shaw, be very afraid.
Mino, or Dakota for that matter, what colour is the robe?
Perhaps it all stems to too much free time. With all of our advances, many people have way too much time on their hands. With out interests, or ambition, they cling to what is easy. And what is easiest, turning on the TV. Something has to fill the airwaves.
The other thing that blows my mind is these created celebrities from shows like American idol. A few weeks earlier most folks would not give these "celebrities" a spare quarter. But a few weeks on a TV show with uber hype and people fall all overthemselves to get a piece of them.
Here is a crazy story for you. Up here in Canada we have not only a Canadian idol, but a french version as well. I was out in the east coast of Canada shooting for a french show about french Candaians living outside of Quebec. We are out there for a week and the producer wants us to do a story about this guy who won the French versions folks, or more how all these people have flocked to his folks house. His parents told us about bus loads of people stoping by, they had three huge scrapbooks full of well wishers notes. They even told us of a story of somebody taking the dogs Doodoos as a momento. Now these were nice, small town folks, they had no reason to make that up. So explain any of that to me.

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

I would agree with you prarieboy about too much free time, but on the flip side of the coin I see a lot of children being left unattended or neglected and the argument to support that is that we don't have enough free time. I think Television is a big part of the problem, It sublimely takes our lives right out from under us and twists our very lifestyles. For example. Before TV was so much a part of day to day existance people used to have creative hobbies..Huge trainsets lived in peoples basements and butterfly collections hung proudly on peoples walls and I think we were a more tightly knit community depending on each other as individuals for our social experience. Tv replaced the hobby and sadly our social interactivity. We interact now with a box that is cleverly engineered program wise to keep us watching...What's next...What channel and brought to us by what...What is it we need that we don't have..What should we eat or drink, how big should our TV's be and who's gonna win the big game who's gonna win us over...What team are we on, and **** look how the time flies, time to go to bed. We on DVXuser are the lucky ones...We've busted out, and are now glued to the forum, but at least we still interact p2p. Words cannot describe how much we need to live in fear of the glass tit.(television) If we no longer require our freedom, Television is wating in the wings to adopt us whole heartedly and show us all we need to know. And more importantly...Who we need to know...The Celebrity

Yes I guess I'm wasn't finnished and sorry for hardlining your thread Thartley I just need a place to spew my generalized ranting somtimes ;)

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

Yes, I am sorry too. I could not agree more Mino. It is far too easy, and it is up to ad execs and the like to make it easier and more alluring. As my better half (much better) like to say, it is all about priorities. What is important to us. This ease of existence in front of the tube is sad. Peoples idols are created for us to consume. And there is no better stage for that than this week in Jacksonville.

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

I remember when I stayed with my mom for a bit when my father died...She lived in a trailer stacked in the middle of a million doublewides all the same. Anyway I wasn't allowed to smoke in the house so I'd have to smoke on the deck in minus 35 degree weather(a temp you are familliar with Prarieboy ;D) Out there on the deck at night, I'd stare out along the perfectly straight trailer park road And in every window there in the darkness the light would go up and down according to what was firing out of those 30 some odd tv's I could see. All in unison up and down...darkness and light. all on the same channel and there was a profound sense of wonder within me that this could even be happening. It was kind of like all the people stacked up in the matrix all having this fake reality pumped into them. Really weird. Much to cold to study for any length of time though.

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

With all that said, I just got back from the gorcery store. Is it SOOOO wrong to want to ram little old ladies into the oatmeal display in Publix? I ask you! I also want to know why they insist on having "wine tastings" in there. I dont go to Wal-Mart (aka The Evil Empire) because it is too crowded with folks who marry within their immediate family, but having a wine tasting at Publix is infuriating. The place is always packed. At least send warnings of the upcoming event in the mail! And why did that lady pull EVERY SINGLE PORK ROAST OUT OF THE MEAT BIN to inspect it, with three huge ones already in her cart? All I wanted was a Boston Butt, for crying out loud...I had to go to Winn Dixie across the street just for a roast. And, because I wanted a bottle of adult beverage (after the shopping trip I had just been on) I chose to go see my neighborhood sommelier and bought alittle something for later. There is already easily five times the traffic out here in the beaches community than we normally have. Understandable, but its driving me crazy. >:( My daughter spends most of her time writing and up at the library, or sketching. Since she got her driver's license, she is officially been weened off the glass tit. :D

Re: Help me survive Superbowl Week!

Don't get me started on the shopping experience.....Ram the little old ladies I say, right into the oatmeal ;D
