GH2 Help Me Save my time bound Premiere CS5.5 MTS Project!

Hey guys,

A proud GH2 user here and I've recently purchased the CS5.5 Production Bundle. I'm working on a time bound video for my brothers birthday-- basically a four minute compilation of 1080 24p footage. I'm using the AVCHD 1080p24 Preset. I'm running it on a MBP 2.66 ghz Core 2 Duo w/ 4 gigs of ram. I realize the specs of my machine aren't ideal for native MTS editing, but premiere has really been doing a fine job at least as long as i'm previewing everything within Premiere.

His birthday is on monday and I have the edit complete. But, just as luck would have, now that i'm in the vfx and exporting phase I'm running into some problems:

1. Everytime I export the video, the quality is crappy. What am I doing wrong? I've tried a I realize that I need to remove the 60i wrapper, Since i'm using the AVCHD preset shouldn't Premiere be doing it for me? I've tried removing it manually using AE, but when I hit guess pulldown under interpret footage, the frame rate drops to 19.something fps. Do you guys recommend I convert all the clips and replace the clips in Premiere with the newly converted ones using another codec? How can I do so in Premiere or AfterEffects natively and what codec should I use for maximum quality? I don't really have money for a new app.

2. Supposing I stick to my native MTS work flow in Premiere, I still need to do some fancy titling and some basic compositing effects using After Effects and Mocha. Mocha doesn't support MTS. How do I go about solving this problem? I've tried converting to Apple's Intermediate Codec and even the lossless Animation codec and when the clips transition in Premiere, there is a clear difference in quality between the original and new clip. What gives? Still the 60i wrapper issue?

Your help would be greatly appreciated! Help me finish this project and get a high quality video ready for my brothers birthday!

Thanks guys!

I believe you can create a proxy in AE and then import the proxy to mocha and import the proxy's settings or values into AE into the original file.
I remember doing something like this in AE CS4, don't exactly remember all the details though.

Can't help you on number 1 though.

Number One: I don't know about CS5.5 but in CS5 the preset you would be using is NOT listed under AVCHD but under "Digital DSLR"! Unless they made the preset name diffierent for Apple.

How you exporting? What codec?

I would not uns Apples intermediate codec, it's crap... the animation codec should serve you well and it is better all around for AE and Mocha as they are really frame/field specific applications that really do not like highly compressed material... so it is worth the time to transcode.

As far as switching between AE and Premiere, this is really Adobe's strength: you can even cut-and-paste files from a Premiere project (timeline) directly into AE, then render them out, or link a AE-Project to Premiere with dynamic link (import AE composition to Premiere).

Thanks for the response! I don't know about CS5, but I've been using the AVCHD 1080p24 preset under the AVCHD header-- i figured this is what I should use since my footage is in AVCHD format. Is this wrong? I also see the Digital SLR header and the DSLR 1080p24 present under it. Should I use this instead? If yes, can I easily switch the settings of my timeline?

Cheers!

The GH2 shoots to AVCHD, not the H.264 implementation of the Canon DSLRs, so you're sequence should be correct. Does the GH2 still shoot 24p in a 60i wrapper? If so, I think that's your problem, as the footage isn't exactly 24p yet.

I'm not positive, but from what i've read on forums, it does. Shouldn't CS5.5 handle the 60i removal? Any idea how I can use After Effects to remove it because as I said in my first post I've tried removing it manually using AE, but when I hit guess pulldown under interpret footage, the frame rate drops to 19.something fps?

Premiere can handle 60i removal, but only in certain circumstances. For instance, 24p DV footage from the DVX100 series has to be captured with the scene detection" option in order to be properly done. Cinema Tools (not sure if it will for AVCHD) and AE are much better options.

If you're asking me what codec i am exporting in, i didn't export anything at all. All i did was copy the values from mocha that i needed into AE.

Hi, you wrote

I was just wondering about your work-flow. BTW sorry about the confusion with the Adobe pre-sets and thanks to Gary Huff for the clarification.

According to everything I've read, your assumption that CS5.5 removes the 60i wrapper is correct. If you have set up your project/sequence correctly. Maybe try dragging your clip from the project-window into that little "create sequence" button at the bottom right of the window, as this will set up a sequence with the correct parameters to match your material. Or set up a new project and import your old project into the new one. You have rendered the time-line before trying to play it back real-time?

Good luck.
