Help me choose a shotgun mic...

I've narrowed my choices down to two shotgun mics...

AT897 - link
AT8035 - link

I would like to go with the AT8035. My only concern is that OCCASIONALLY I would like to mount the mic on-camera. Please try not to lecture me on how thats not the right choice... Sometimes it is. If the 8035 is simply too huge to have mounted on-camera in any situation, then I'm going with the 897..

I know the 897, and I love the sound it produces, for the cost. My main concern is the on-camera mounting option.....

I run a HMC150 and an AT897, so that's helpful!

I've attached an image to show the general size of the mic when mounted on the 150 - I've found that the length of the mic will cause it to be in the image when zoomed all the way out (unless you slide it really far back on the mount), but zooming in about 10% will work just fine. I would assume the extra length of the AT8035 would make it difficult to impossible to position so it doesn't interfere with your camera at full wide.

Not sure how the diameters of the microphones differ - but the AT897 came with two O-rings, which were absolutely necessary. The mic is too thin to sit in the HMC150 mount snugly - but O-rings fix the problem. Hope this helps.

Thats actually pretty cool! Im going with the 897 for the time being but I may consider getting that adapter later this year!

A 897 was my first shotgun, and I still use it often with good results. And if you ever need it, it can be battery powered instead of phantom. I have used this feature with a Sennheiser plug on transmitter which is a pretty cool wireless option.

I think I've used the 896 before, and I LOVE Audio Technica for shotgun mics. I use AKG for everything in my studio (and headphones), Yamaha HS80Ms for monitors, and everything Panasonic for video, but Audio Technica makes some killer shotgun mics and niche mics!

Rig looks nice Neighborhood. I always love seeing an HMC150 in action too.

If that's a lilliput monitor you are running with there, we have EXACTLY the same setup. Pretty cool...

I use the 897 with my HMC150 and it is a good fit. Very nice audio. Slide it back slightly in the mount and it stays out of the picture. Very good choice.

Yup you got it! I've found it to be a great affordable setup at my price point.

Thanks! You'll be happy with the 897, I'm sure. I am lucky enough to live a few minutes from Audio-Technica HQ, so each winter when they have huge warehouse sales I always stock up on discounted audio gear - the 897 was part of this year's purchase.

I got a Sound Devices 788T, which is an amazing 12 track field recorder, and I'm trying to figure our what camera to mount on top of it to shoot my film. Any ideas?
