Help making website.

I've put all my free time into making films. Now I'd like to make my website. Any tips?

John Hudson and I talked about a website where they give you a blank form...like "title" "pictures" "video"...and you just fill it out...does that exist?

Or do I have to get something like Frontpage or jalbums...

I'm not looking to get into website design...I'd rather be filming...

Thanks for any help!

Well, there are so many different levels of web design :). There are those who code everything by hand. Many people use dreamweaver but that's not software for a beginner. I wouldn't recommend Frontpage. It creates some of the most messy worst code I have ever seen. Hardly multi browser compatible.

I know there are places on the net where you can go and simply enter your information into a form. I don't have any addresses off hand though. Have you tried Google yet?

I use Frontpage 2003, and the code is not bad. Supposedly the code is pretty much on par with Dreamweaver (at least that's what people said on Amazon). If you want to delve into the topic more, one of the best books on html is "HTML for the World Wide Web" by Elizabeth Castro. Also, you'll find that Photoshop skills come in very handy for the web.

Anyone know how much space I should get? I need enough for short films, trailers, and a lot of pictures...

I remember hearing "too many people are visiting my site and it's down now" or "too high of traffic volume" what does this mean?

God, I sound like a noob...What's that clunk sound? heh :)

thanks guys...

As for storage, that all depends on how much video you think you will have up at one time, and how it is compressed. For a filmmaker I would think that at least 500mb would be required.

As for the traffic issue, hosting companies allow your site to transfer a certain amount of data per month, based on your hosting package. If you go over this limit, they will either shut down your site temporarily, or slap you with extra fees, maybe both. At this point, I have no idea how much bandwith you would need. I'm actually looking into this whole hosting thing myself right now, so take everything I've said with a grain of salt. I can't wait to see what other people have to say about this, as this information will be invaluable to me as well.

Thanks for that at least. I'm hoping since there are so many people with websites, someone will jump in...Not just for me, but for you and everyone who wants to know, and people who don't even post!

If I find out elsewhere, I'll post it for everyone.

no problem...I've been with them for a year now with zero problems and never run out of bandwidth. Support in chat room is always right on the money. they have a free site builder too though I've never used it as I use Flash.

I like 1and1.com -- very cheap, lots of space, and some good templates and applications available as part of your package.

Thanks guys, both very helpful...

I think I'm gonna read some books...The templates dont explain how to upload video...I got everything else...

There's also WinSCP, if your website host supports it. It's a secure FTP (so no one steals your password) that also does filetransfers via secure copy (which is not FTP...more like copying files on your harddrive).

I don't have the link for it, but a Google should bring it up.

Oh. Yeah. Free.
