Help! Major audio malfunction on AF100...

Just piping in here to offer my sympathies. This happened to me as well on my first AF100 shoot and it was crushing. It was not only my first job for a client that was supposed to become quite regular, but I'd convinced them to throw down a lot of money for the AF100 and accessories. The interview subject was flying back to the Middle East the following morning and the shoot could not be re-done. Thankfully, the client understood...but it was one of the most embarrassing moments I've had with a client. I had to trash the entire project, which was not fun for my finances at the time.

As Noel mentioned, I felt idiotic for not double-checking to make sure the audio was sticking to the card. It's something that I typically do, but to be honest have never had an issue with until that day. Anyway, firmware updated and haven't had a problem since. It's a great camera and I'm not sure there's a better deal out there right now considering the price.

Hi,

Check to see what level your software is. If it isn't 1.16, do an update. I think 1.14 put the slash through the audio so you would have a visual on your audio being recorded. I would be willing to be that you still have VFR on, so that even though you had the frame rate set to 24, it was still not recording audio. You need to turn off the VFR, not just have it set to 24. And with the lastest firmware you will notice a red slash across the audio area.

Best regards,

Jan

I like you Jan so please don't take this personally but why is Panasonic so rigid on the issue oof enabling sound in overcrank and sticking with a delivery codec spec where a capture codec should be?

The AF is not an ENG camera or a consumer camcorder where a user would expect to plug in footage for broadcast while skipping an nle system. In face quite the opposite.

Steve it isn't rigidity, it is a matter of standards. If we allowed it, there would be 3-4 times the number of posts about why is my audio off speed and how do I and/or can I fix it. The point is that from the very first tape based Varicam, audio has never been recorded. It is a non-standard recording. Getting a major manufacturer to make something that outputs a non-standard format would be harder than getting an elephant in a living room.

No offense taken,

Jan

Hi Traviswears and Jan,

Thank you both very much for your input. The day after this happened I updated my firmware. So now I also have that slash through the "A" when it's on VFR. But I've also learned several lessons from this. Perhaps the most important: always do a test record and playback beforehand. Basic common sense I guess, which is why I'm still kicking myself for not having done that.

:)
