Help! interlace style flicker on pan shots

Hi Guys,

I noticed this problem in my last TVC and one i just completed tonight and i'm stressing about it...shooting SD 576 25p

I can notice on some of my slow panning shots that some items in the image have this horrible interlaced looking flicker. I always shoot 25p so i'm not in the wrong mode. It's not in all the images but i need to know what the hell is causing it. I'm using my normal workflow... export my edits from liquid (AVI) into AE7 export uncompressed then squeeze it. I'm convinced it's not settings since i've used this workflow for sometime and it normally yields great results.

Please if anyone can help that'd be awesome (P.S i view my work on a 46" inch 1920 x 1080p LCD)

Is it possible you had the OIS on? That will affect slow pans quite a bit, as the mechanism will compensate only for so long during the pan, then physically jump. I've never heard of an interlacing effect from it though.

If it looks like the material is interlaced, then I would suspect your workflow as the culprit. You must consistently treat your assets as progressive.

I always treat my footage as progressive ALWAYS! it's so weird in one shot it looks totally progressive then at the end of the pan before the hard cut some of the image quivers (around edges)

If you're shooting SD 576 in PAL then that is by default an interlaced format. Although you select 25p, I believe the camera still records the image to an interlaced stream, meaning it splits the progressive frame to 2 interlaced fields.
Do you see this problem on the computer monitor or only on the TV?

Ok. I went back and watched the tape itself and the problem is there so it's got nothing to do with my workflow. I see it moreso on diagonal pan shots! could it be settings..? Ahhh it's driving me nuts. I can only see it on my LCD

You mean the LCD panel connected to your computer, or one connected to a standalone DVD player? If it is the latter, what about trying it on another TV? It could be a problem with how this particular LCD panel handles motion.

Also, are you authoring a real progressive DVD, or a lower-field first interlaced DVD as is usually made from DV?

I mean LCD TV sorry. I author real progressive but that still doesn't help because it's happening on tape. I might try shooting hooked up to my LCD TV realtime and see if i get the flickers while panning around.

This is bad...:(

It's not OIS turned on

I have shot to mini DV and P2 in 576i / 25p and i can still see the jitters on pans (mostly diagonal on pans) I have watched it on my LCD tv and a tube TV and their still freakin there!!! I shot a small scene with every scene file mode but it's still there. Does anyone else have any suggestions. I can't see these jittery lines on my PC screen, it's so weird. Do you think my camera is stuffed cos you can't see this in HD mode.

Any help or suggestions?

P.S. It looks like bad interlaced jitters on edges or fine lines whilst panning

Have you tried connecting your camera directly to the TV and setting the HVX200 for 720P output?

:) I had a minor breakthrough today!

But first last night while searching threads i came across one from ages back about ppl complaining about the 25p video they were getting from the DVX it was like 12 pages long and everyone was getting involved even Barry.

So anyways i work in an electrical store and i decided to play the disc with the shi*ty footage on it on an LCD tv with a progressive scan DVD player and WA-LA no more jagged edges on pans!

So my next issue is how come when i play my mini DV 576i 25p footage straight from the HVX through component on my LCD tv are there still jagged interlaced looking edges???? Thoff said try playing it out with the 720p av out setting but you can only do that if u shot to P2 right?

How come the AV out options say "576i and 1080i" Does this mean somehow my mini DV is playing out interlaced thus causing all this PAIN???

Someone please read this and respond, i would be so grateful

Cheers

Ben :dankk2:

As I said in my previous post, 576 is the PAL standard definition format which is by default and interlaced format. Even if you shoot 25p in 576 it will record the progressive scanned footage in an interlaced stream.
