Also try discmakers, a lttle more expensive. They may require you to state in writingf that you have copyright or sync rights to all content to all content and if you use commerial music to provide a copy of the license agreement.
My boss wants DVDs made from a glass master. He says too many people have had trouble playing the DVD-R disk that I have made him.
I have been making disk for years and have had very few problems with people being able to play them. He says two of my disk have not played and that is two too many.
Norm do you make glass masters or only dup to dvd-r?
The DVD you buy in a commercial package is made using entirely different chemistry from the DVD-R (or plus r or + or - RW, etc). And yes, those "replicated" disks are much more reliable. But you cannot produce them. The mastering and replication equipment is far from the prices of the stuff we use. To create them you need to be able to create a tape master in a very strict format that the replicator can accept and they run it through their factory. Once you are producing quantities over a few hundred, this is actually much cheaper, and much faster.
Hi Ronbo. First, thanks to Blaine for plugging me in this thread, as well as to Jack (formerly jdanstan) for directing me to it.
www.playitagainprod.com for our standard pricing. Automatic 10% DVXuser discount off the standard pricing, with faster turn arounds than anyone else can offer .... and/or we'll beat any other listed price out there on comparable packaging/product.
Ronbo, ChrisByrnes nailed it on the head ... glass masters are only replication, and those that CAN replicate inhouse have nearly $1 Million or more invested into the process ... it takes special labs to make the glass maters, and then very high end equipment to press it out.
As far as your boss is concerned, he's got SOME validation, as DVD-R's are still only about 96-97% compatible with DVD players ... meaning, as more & more DVD players are purchased, more & more people will have DVD players that can play DVD-R, as it's typically only the older players that MAY have an issue with them. Otherwise, next to a replicated disk (DVD-5/9/10 formats), DVD-R is THE most widely accepted disc out there.
If you're looking at upwards of 5,000 disks, then you can honestly get the best deals through replication, hands down. Just make sure you will really NEED that many, and that you've got plenty of time for the turn around time for the production of that amount (typically 3+ weeks).
If you're CRUNCHED for time, the duplication is the way to go, as most houses (including mine) could get you out the door in 5 days or less.
PM if if you're interested in speaking further on this.
Thanks for all the great info guys. I have forwarded this to my boss.
We have already ordered 1000 disk that are being produced from a glass master. They took a DVD-R as the master. We are waiting for delivery now and yes three weeks is the time they said it would take.
That is not my concern really. My concerned is the matter of professionalism they have demonstrated. They have fumbled my artwork twice and changed my contact person three times. On last contact I was told they never received my cover art when I know they did. I sent it on a disk at the same time I sent the DVD. It was confirmed that it was received.
Then I got an email saying they never got it. So I sent it to them in an email. Two weeks later I call to see how the project is going and a new person in the art department says it was never received.. I say I know it was to check with ________ and they say ______ no longer works there. So send it again.
At this point I am getting concerned that I may have chosen the wrong place. I know I am going to need to order another thousand next week and I think maybe I should look elsewhere.
So anyone have any other recommendations for a place that makes glass masters? Also if there is a delay on my first order I may need to get a bunch of DVD-Rs to fill the void between shipments.
If that is the case I will be calling you Envision.
Thanks again to everyone that responded I am going to give you credits on my next production.
Sorry to hear your service has stunk so badly with that company. You should be able to get glass masters/replication through nearly any Replication and/or Duplication company. If you deal direct with a TRUE replication company, you'll be dealing with a much larger entity, and will always have the potential for staffing changes, more miscommunications, etc. However, you're also cutting out the middle man (a duplication company that's getting you the replication through them), so there's something to be said for that as well.
More often, duplication companies are smaller, so you'll have a little more intimate customer service (hopefully), and more consistancy ... however, if you're wanting replication & your dealing with a duplication house, then you've just entered a middle man into the equation. This is neither good nor bad, as sometimes they can actually get a better deal that you can because of a monthly minimum order amount they have in place, etc ... and you do have one place to hold responsible ... them.
Anyway, if you DO need that quick order to fill the gap, I'd look forward to hearing from you & will make sure you're treated right.
if you need the BEST...get Ritek...if you need the BEST injet printable and still as good as RITEK then get the Taiyo Yuden Silver Injet Printable or the White RITEKs
They have had the lowest prices on media for the past 5 years, not sure why people buy anywhere else since they are the longest dot-com media distributor on the net.
In the past, when I'd used Ritek for inkjet printable discs, I'd always end up with some coasters, so I personally can't agree that they're the best.
Taiyo Yuden, however, I've NEVER had a single coaster from ... great, great, discs ... the trouble for me with places like Supermediastore is finding a good value on thermal printable discs ... specifically ones that are rated to withstand the heat of the Rimage Everest II without frying the data on the disc ... that quality that I need in the discs tends to weed out who I can buy from, in addition to running up the cost of the average disc.
Smithers,
The entire DVD image needs to be created by you, including all menus, selection paths, extra content. You create a master (generally on tape, but some replicators will now accept DVD-R masters) using software that is specific to that purpose. There are lots of application programs that create DVDs.
