HELP: HVX Audio Levels Work but NO Audio Playback

I'm shooting my HVX to tape today. When I went to use the camera I found that the audio levels of the internal mic were registering fine on the bar graph. However when I go to monitor the levels with headphones I don't hear anything. When I record a test clip I see that the audio levels are moving normally but I hear only an EXTREMELY low volume version of the audio on the headphones. It's so low that I think that I'm imagining it. During playback the internal speaker of the HVX does not play back the audio either.
 
Hi Barry,

This is a very amateur but innocent question, where are the volume buttons? I'm renting the camera from a university and have actually never had to use the volume buttons.
