HELP! Having Problems with aspect ratio...

Ok, here is the short of it...

i keep having probelms with cpature programs in that they think my footage is 1.2 vs. .9

i shot it on a dvx-100a in F5

it is NOT in Anamorphic or 16:9 but it is in the FAKE letterbox where it is 4:3 but it has black bars above and below

first canopus' capture utility thought it was letterbox/16:9? but i was able to capture it directly in premiere and now my new matrox rtx-100 thinks its 1.2 aspect even though my project settings are standard .9 pixel

is anyone else having this problem??

i have got to find a fix for this, if i call the manufacturers they automatically blame it on the camera being 24p...

Re: HELP! Having Problems with aspect ratio...

I've heard that the original DVX's had a bug that, when in letterbox mode, they would also set the 16:9 flag.

I thought that was fixed in later versions. I've had mine nearly a year and I haven't had that problem...

Re: HELP! Having Problems with aspect ratio...

i think it is a software bug because it doesn't happen if you capture directly in premiere, only if you use canopus or matrox's capture utilities.

unfortunately the matrox rtx-100 card doesn't want you to capture in premiere.

so far the matrox card is sucking pretty badly.

what is everyone else using for a capture card/capture utility????

Re: HELP! Having Problems with aspect ratio...

I have a Matrox RT2000 system. Don't ever use it. Once I got the DVX100 I switched to Vegas 4.0 and never looked back. It's a much more powerful system than Premiere 6.0 or 6.5, and you're not saddled with the golden handcuffs of any particular hardware card -- you can use any firewire port, whether it's on your motherboard or a cheap add-in card or whatever.

Hi Barry,

There never was or has been a flag in the DVX100 for 16:9. There is a choice for Letterbox and now with the A, Squeeze. Neither put any signal in the recording to indicate a 16:9 image.

This is a decision made in importing the image into the NLE.

Hope this clarifies,

so...how is this problem fixed?! I hadnt had problems capturing letterbox footage for quite a while, and then suddenly, WHAM, I cant capture with a .9 aspect ratio. Letterbox footage that I have previously captured with a .9 ratio now captures at 1.2?? Even though all the setttings are still on 4:3..I havent changed a thing. What the hell! I've tried re-installing FCP, still captured with a 1.2 aspect ratio. Tried it in Premiere, still doesnt work. Seriously, what gives?

Ive found the only way to capture my letterbox footage with a 0.9 ratio is to record some normal footage first, and then let it keep capturing after it switches back to lettterbox. but then I start the camera again, and its back to 1.2. GRRRRRRRRRRR
