Hi guys, I ve got two offers from friends, the conditions are as listed in the title, they are both used but in good condition.

I'm an entry level student filmmaker( about to start my first semester in the upcoming september), anyone can offer me any advice on which to buy ?

many thanks !

edit:

oops sorry, didn't notice the other option was 14-42 PLUS 20mm pancake... in that case it's more complicated. well, it depends on what ur gonna be shooting mostly. I think I'd get the second option (14-42 plus 20mm) and tried to buy a used 45-200mm later. cheers!

I imagine your funds are limited. Therefore I would get the 14-140mm lens since it's video enhanced lens for your filmmaking. I have the 14-45mm and it is wonderful, but have not heard as good comments about the 14-42. The 20mm is excellent but noisy for movies unless you turn the auto-focus off... Al

Videos using the 20mm/f1.7 lens using AFS record the focusing of the lens with clicks. So you need to either turn focusing off, or use an external recorder to avoid this annoying clicking sound in your movies.

The 14-140mm package is better value - it's a bette lens for video than the 14-42mm and, if you changed your mind later, it would sell for a better price. The 14-42mm is a classic "kit" lens - not bad, but not great, but since there are so many around, it doesn't have great resale value.

Just to illustrate - the 14-140mm, sold on its own is about £600 in the UK (= about $950)
The 14-42mm and 20mm are about £400 combined (= about $620)

A GH2 with 14-140mm costs a little less than a GH2 with 14-42 and the 20mm - I know you're talking GH1, but it suggest that an extra $150 for the 2-lens kit is a great deal - unless, of course then 2-lens option is in much better condition

Here in the States the 14-140 is worth at least $500 used. The 20mm is worth about $350 tops used and the 14-42 is somewhere around $125 give or take.

Subtract those values from the totals and you have what each camera body is going to be costing you.

For video the 14-140 is a must have, as is the 20mm at some point. The 14-42 isn't much more than "something to get you in the game" IMO.

Right out of the box, I think you will have more use for the 14-140. WITH DECENT LIGHT it will cover most of your initial shooting situations.

yes, it may be a better value, but keep in mind that unless he's gonna be shooting outdoors in good light only, he's rather screwed:) i own 14-140, it's a great lens, but sucks in lowlight (obviously). I'd suggest to get either 14-140 AND something fast for lowlight indoors or 14-42 with 20mm pancake (though $900 is too much for it imho).

Is the 45-200mm good for outdoor sports videos? I just ordered one off ebay, but i haven't received it to test yet. I have the 14-42mm which i rarely use unless around the house with the kids. I have been using FD glass outside but its hard to hold focus sometimes in fast situations.

Yes, i use it for shooting from the back of a jetski the focus is very snappy, lens is sharp, OIS is mild (this is good). http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?238888-This-was-Hell-on-the-Codec
