Hi, my dvx100b was working fine yesterday, but now when i went to rip something my computer isnt even picking up my camera. I unplugged eveyrthing, reinstalled the drivers, everything. i have no idea what to do. if it isnt the cord, and it is the camera, what are my options? save buying a 500 dollar minidv tape deck?

You could buy a cheap mini-dv camera and use it as a deck. A lightly used one could be found for $50-$150, or new for $200.

Are you on PC or mac?

It's possible that the firewire card has been fried by plugging in the camera to the computer while the camera was turned on. Unfortunately it is a reoccurring problem that is very costly to repair.

yea especially since im running a custom built pc. there is no room for a new firewire card, and the old one was onbaord my mother board, so i dont know what im going to do.

Do you have anything else to plug into the computer's firewire to make sure it is the culprit?
Same question for your camera. I'd try it on another machine with another cable, and eventually you'll find the problem.

It's most likely either a dead firewire port on the camera or a dead firewire port on the PC.

If it's the camera port that's dead, buy a cheap consumer-level MiniDV camera and use that to capture. (Which is what you should have been doing all along. It makes no sense to wear out the expensive heads on your DVX100b doing capture work.) Buying a cheap cam will most likely be less expensive than repairing the port on your DVX100b.

If it's the computer's firewire port that's dead, and you truly cannot install a firewire card, then you're in trouble. Only alternative I can think of is to invest in a cheap PC or laptop that you can use as a capture machine. Capture to an external drive, then move the drive to your editing PC.

Good luck!

ture, if you just want to start editing asap. go to school or your friends and use their computer to just capture it.
then just bring back the footage by putting it on a external hard drive or something

i mean, thats really the one thing i wanted to avoid. it was nice having a pretty nice editing set up in my room, now that i have to go to the tech center on campus to rip eveyrthing its really a pain in the ass. i got a new cord, and when i go home for the weekend, im going to try to connect my friends camera to my computer and my camera to his computer so see what really is broken.

I had a similar problem, one of my two DVX's wasn't being recognised via the firewire. I thought after reading many posts that the firewire port was fried. I tried as a last ditch effort to reset the DVX, I did it and it worked. No promises on it working for you, but it did for me, good luck.

does the dvx play footage normally on the lcd? while it' connected to the computer?

yes it does, does that mean anything specifically, and i tried resetting. didnt do anything. thanks for the suggestion though i hadnt thought of that

is thier any posibility it is just the cable? i would rather hear that it is the 15 dollar cord, then the camera or firewire card.
