Hey all, I need an expert on the GH4....

I recently bought my GH4 (2.0 firmware installed). I want to set up timelapse and set exposure to 25 second intervals for night time.

Does anyhow have a tutorial and or can tell me step by step how to set this up on the GH4? I need detailed steps showing what to do.

Thank you

Do you have experience in timelapse or are you new to it? The GH4 sets up like any other timelapse intervelometer only easier as its built into camera. I use the kessler app on my iphone to calculate some basic settings to get he results I would like. On the GH4 you need to make sure electronic shutter is turned off if you want to expose for longer than 2sec (took me a bit to sort out why it wasn't allowing me to expose longer)

If you have very little experience any timelapse tutorial on youtube will be a valuable place to start to understand how the settings for each exposure effect the final product. Once you understand how each setting effects image you can just plug the numbers into the GH4 built in intervelometer and off you are. timelapse is a lot like shooting film even the best calculations can sometimes result in unexpected results once played back at final frame rate. Getting good at timelapse can take a lot of trial and error. Its a art like anything else.

I think you have to do some added work for sunrise and sunsets. Dealing with the different exposures is somewhat complex.

I have Electronic shutter as off.

I have done timelapse work before but only on the HVX at 2fps.

I need basic how to for settings. So set up so I can press rec and start timelapse. Great camera but no tutorials anywhere as of yet on this.... So anyone here able to write up a basic set up of setting up timelapse?

I want to timelapse the night time sky. Stars are what im after. So I want to keep the shutter open at 25 seconds. Do I set this up in standard video mode or iA mode. Sorry. I have the instruction here but the camera has more features then my HVX. Slight learning curve

Use M manual mode. Set your lenses to manual focus. All manual.

Aperture: In this case you will want a bright lens to capture as much light as possible. Make sure you set your focus point also. Last time I did a night starlapse I had had a few beers (cottage) and had forget to set focus distance (it was really dark) and had some out of focus stars but a nice tree branch in focus.

Shutter Speed: set it to 25 sec.

Interval: This is up to you to decide on how much change you want in your scene between exposures. Obviously if your shutter is open 25 seconds you minimum time between exposures is over 25 as your shutter needs to close between exposures.

Exposures: You will have to do the math on how many exposures you will need to make up the length. I use an app on my phone for most of my calculations. Kessler app for iphone is great and free.

I suggest watching some general youtube tutorials on using a DSLR for timelapse as they provide many more creative control than most video cameras offer.
