Help! DVX shooting Black!

Hello,

I´m currently in Argentina at the Iguazu Falls, one of the most spectacular sites in South America. This morning I took my DVX-100 to capture some footage, and filmed a bit of a monkey swinging in the vines. When I approached the waterfalls, I improvised a rain cover by wrapping the whole camera in Saran wrap. I wrapped it a bit too tight, and it was difficult to change the ND filter settings as well as roll the iris wheel. When I turned on the camera, the picture was black but I could see the display settings (zoom, focus, etc.). Ok... so I went to ND 1/8, then ND off, still black. I opened the iris all the way, still black. I have used this camera for over a year on a doc, I´ve been through hell and back and I have never encountered this problem. Needless to say, the manual does not cover this issue. As a test, I recorded some footage while in black, and then switched to VCR mode. My monkey footage looked fine, but afterwards was black with audio levels, so the camera is able to record.

My hypothesis is somehow the ND filter was pushed in while wrapping the camera and is somehow malfunctioning and totally blocking the CCD´s. My second theory is that the prism that captures to the CCD has somehow moved. I have played with the focus setting on the viewfinder, opened the LCD, and still the same problem. No condensation warning has come up, and honestly the spray from the falls was minimal. Help!

I won't be in South America long, and I need to capture some footage while I´m here.

Thanks!
Alexander

You could consider trying a "reset" just to see if it clears the problem. As for your ND theory, even if it is in fact "stuck" at 1/64 a bright enough source should be able to get an image that would be above absolute black. Try pointing it at a brightly lit wall or equally reflective source to see if you can get anything to read.

Hard reset

I guess I´ll the try the hard reset. Fingers crossed... And yes, lens cap is off.

Thanks,
Alexander

Are you getting any kind of "feeling" for the filter moving when you switch positions? You know, you kind of feel it physically moving into position.
also, besides black, are you getting any kind of display on the screen telling you to add or remove the ND filter?

if not the ND filter, or some master ped setting gone wrong, i suggest you bring it back to your dealer, our contact a panasonic rep
