Help? Dialog using DVX100a & ME66/KG Shotgun

I am a newbie to the DVX100a. I am wanting to shoot video with my DVX100a while hooked up to a Senneiser ME66/K6. I am only shooting dialog (for a short film) and am wondering....

1) The amount of sound I should be picking up in relation to my on-screen audio meter?

2) Is it normal to hear dead sound (like when your tv has the blue screen and is turned up really loud - it gives of a steady empty sound) through the headphones hooked (which are plugged into the camera) so long as the dead sound isn't showing up on the audio meter?

Thanks mucho,

You wan't to pay attention to your levels.

Test, 1, 2, Test !

Watch the peaking into Red. If it's peaking over then make adjustment's.

I used a ME66 w/ DVX100P and John is correct. Adjust your audio level so that when you record your dialog and if it goes into red, you need to tweak it down some. In fact, I would give yourself some dynamic range unless you're compressing the audio signal before you enter the pre's on the DVX. Whatever ambient noise you hear after that would depend on the room you're in. I haven't noticed much low level buzzing with either the DVX100 or the ME66. Make sure your cable is balanced. Another thing that may help is to use an internal battery on the MIC and turn off Phantom +48V. Again, I haven't noticed a difference but it may induce some sort of noise, depending on the condition of your cable, etc...

I hope this contributes to your project!
