FS7: Help connecting to external monitor

I need to connect my FS7 to a client monitor (consumer monitor without LUTs). I am using HDMI. I am able to connect however, the image looks like garbage, there is a lot of tearing and artifacts. When I switch the setting for the target device to "recorder" instead of "monitor" the image quality looks much better, however, there is no LUT applied. I can always bake in a LUT internally to resolve the issue but then I sacrafice my final recording.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Is there a work around or something I'm not doing right?

Details? Is it a decently high end 'consumer' monitor? OLED? 4K? HD? Have you tried adjusting monitor settings such as sharpness/color enhancement? Did you start out by at least adjusting the monitor to color bars?
What does the same HDMI output look like when it goes to a real professional monitor?

I tried it on multiple HDTVs the result is always the same. It really seems like something wrong with the output of the camera when in "monitor" mode. It's not a color calibration issue, its much worse than that, almost looks like the video signal is breaking up but it is instantly better when selecting "recorder" under the HDMI Target device setting (just no LUT).

I don't have a professional monitor to work with so I can't test SDI. Does SDI carry audio on the FS7?

Yes.
I've never experienced what you are describing... it sounds likely it's the hdmi cable itself... are you saying that when in "monitor" mode, you turn the LUT on to the hdmi output - you get the garbage image. but then when you change it to "recorder" (in the menu) the LUT out of the hdmi automatically goes away - but the image itself now is ok (other than being log and not client friendly)?

Yes.

exactly, which leads me to believe it's not a cable or port issue but rather something that's happening in the camera.

What's your output setting for HDMI in the fs7 menu? (not recorder/monitor) When I connected my smallHD monitor the first time I had to switch it to (or from, it's been a while) PsF. this is in the "video output" settings in the menu

Yes - that output menu for sdi / hdmi depends on what size (HD / UHD, etc) & frame rate you are shooting at....
I have a cheap 7" LCD that I use sometimes with camera that will not take the progressive feed but when I change it to interlaced - it is fine. However, this also isn't likely what's going on with your issue - since you are seeing something (it's just not good).
What LUT are you using? Have you tried other luts on the output (the std Sony 709 lut)?

As a side (or not) director had a black magic motitor the other day and I could not (in ten seconds!) get it working from the Sdi port of the FS7

As another aside... do yourself a big favor and get a system in place for client / director monitor with it's own LUT system (totally seperate from the camera). This has greatly simplified my life on set with the fs7. For me, it's the PIX E5 - which can cross convert sdi/hdmi in / out while giving you the ability to flip between different "looks" with the touch of a button... without ever having to go into that frustrating sony output / LUT menu (especially if changing frame rates, etc.)
Believe Shogun / Ody and a dedicated lut box will give you similar options as well...

So luckily the Teaneck service center is right in my area. I popped in to see if they had any thoughts. They were super helpfull and we tried to troubleshoot it by hooking up a few monitors. That being said, it is clear to me now that there must be something going on internally (possibly with one of the boards.) I have a few upcoming shoots so I couldn't leave it there but I'm planning on taking it back when things slow down. I'll circle back with this thread once the camera is taken apart and properly diagnosed. Stay Tuned.
