GH2 Help! Can anyone explain what this is?

Recently, i have been experiencing strange pixelation blocks in my GH2 1080 24p high quality manual mode footage. No heavy shooting here really - I'll be shooting several 1-8 min clips in a row, and at least one clip in the set always have these artifacts in some of the frames.

This is all from a non-hacked GH2 runing v1.1 firmware. I'ts appeared while using the stock 14-140 HD lens as well as on my canon FD primes. Can someone please explain what's going on here? is this just par for the course and we have to cut around this type of footage, or is there a problem with my unit? This appeared when using both of my Transcend 32GB class 10 cards, after a fresh (quick) format.... Help!

3 short clips in this link, all exhibiting some form of strange pixelation blocking: http://youtu.be/DxKwJllesUw

Thanks.

Just confirming that you formatted the cards IN CAMERA.

If you did...then I think there's a malfunction in your camera.

Before answering, I have to ask -- does this happen when playing back the footage from the camera, or only after importing to a computer?

only after importing to a computer?

You know what? That completely jogged my memory. If you're using Final Cut Pro 7 to Log and Transfer, I've seen these same exact video errors before using that. It's best to avoid L&T all together and use a third-party utility if that's the case.

Well Barry_Green, i have to say, it DOES NOT happen in when palying back on camera. I re-imported the clip and voila! problem is gone! So i guess that means my camera's OK, but what's going on in the transfer?? I am using Panny's software to import, though tecently i discovered that the transfer to PC happens much quicker if I put the SD card into a reader, rather than importing from the camera through it's USB cable... can't say 100% if all error's i've been finding were from manual transfer of SD into card reader, but i'll definately start paying attention.

What is the consensus about importing footage through the camera or via card reader? Where could this corruption be occurring?

Thanks to everyone who's chimed in so far. Great having the DVX community to turn to for help!

I actually use premier pro cs 5.5 and Transfer using the panny app with sd card in a reader... How would you recommend I do the transfers?

Yep, that's exactly what I was expecting.

Again, depends, but at least we've narrowed it down that it is indeed the computer. Second question -- are you using a Mac? And, if so, is it an MBP? We have many reports here of people having glitches when copying footage; we've been seeing this same issue ever since tapeless arrived back in 2004. That's why I always say you would be wisest to use a data copying program that does verification, to ensure that the copy is done properly. Sometimes it just doesn't copy right, and those copy errors result in glitches in the footage. It's not the camera's fault. It's not the memory card's fault. It's the computer's fault, somehow.

No, I'm on a PC, using the panasonic Photofun Software that came with the camera to import. any suggestions re: import from camera with cable vs. card reader? can you reccomend a better software tool that imports and verifies?

You don't need to use any software to import your footage, also if you're using PPro CS5.5 you only need to copy off the mts files. When you plug your camera in with the usb cable just open the card on the camera through windows (it'll appear as a disk drive) and copy the files out of PRIVATE\AVCHD\BDMV\STREAM. Then just drop them into Premiere.

that's true, but what i like about the photofun importer that came with the camera is it automatically imports, logs, names and files everything. With this problem i've experienced, i'm now looking for a program that will do the same, but in addition will also check the files ones they've transferred. Is there such a utility? My issue here is that I've transferred m2ts files off the camera and they have copied onto the computer with some frames corrupted.

Any suggestions? Thanks.
