HELP! Blue bars, and Repair advice

Part I: So I have received the Blue Bars on my DVX100b. It happened on a shoot, and we had to keep going. When we imported with a deck the footage actually was not affected. I have tried cleaning the heads, but when I put the head cleaner in there is no timecode and I am not sure if the camera is recognizing it or playing it.

Part II: Subsequently, I took my DVX into a repair shop to be "professionally cleaned". They tell me that I still have the bars and that my Heads must be Damaged and I need to pay $500 to replace the whole assembly, plus approx $150 for labor. (Although I'm not sure that they didn't just try to use a head cleaner tape also). They only had my camera for about an hour, I took it back to figure out my next step.

Questions:
1 - Have I used the Head Cleaner correctly? My friend said he was able to record with a head cleaner and that fixed his camera (not a DVX).

2 - Is the final answer that the heads are damaged? if yes, is it true that the whole assembly needs to be replaced? And do those prices sound normal?

3 - Could I attempt to replace the assembly myself? I successfully replaced my hard drive in my Powerbook G5, is this along those lines or should I really just let a "pro" do it?

Bonus - What is involved in a "Professional Head Cleaning", is it worth trying a different place for this?

Thanks everyone! Really need to get my DVX back in the mix!
