HELP!!! (Anamorphic mistake....)

Hey all,

Have a pressing problem that I would like your advice/solutions on.

Shooting a feature on the 100A. We're shooting 16x9 with the Panasonic adapter. Today was our first day of shooting. When we looked at the dailies today, we realized that we had been shooting in SQUEEZE MODE with the anamorphic adapter on...

So, our image is doubly squeezed now. We are wondering what to do next. For all subsequent days, we will obviously revert back to shooting in NORMAL mode with the adapter on. However, we need to salvage this footage. I spoke to our editor, who said that it will be possible to import the the footage into Final Cut, then blow it up to resize it back to normal 16x9. He said there would be some resolution loss, but it would not be too bad.

My questions are these:
1)Is this the best way to handle this? Should we import into Final Cut and then resize? If so, what is the best way to go about doing this? Do we import the footage as 16x9, or as something else? Has anyone tried this, or have experience with what the actual loss of resolution will be?
2)Is there another way to salvage the footage? Would it be possible to import the footage along with everything else in the same manner, and then just have the few scenes we shot today be more stretched than the rest of the film?

Really in a tight spot here. Thoughts.....?

Thanks!

Re: HELP!!! (Anamorphic mistake....)

I'd say you'll have a problem with resolution.

There will be a noticable difference in your "saved" shoot footage, compaired to the rest of your shoot.

Personally I'd say reshoot. The likelyhood of combining both footage without a "glaring" problem is slim.

Not the answer you're hoping for, but easier than spending the hours trying to save a shoot that won't come out right in the end.

Re: HELP!!! (Anamorphic mistake....)

Anamorphic adapter + Squeeze mode = In Camera 2.35:1 [roughly]
set up a custom project size 872 x 480 and you may be in good shape.
Not IDEAL but salvagable perhaps...

Best of luck.

Re: HELP!!! (Anamorphic mistake....)

Ok, thanks guys. That's definitely a start. Anyone else? Tips? Crazy ideas? Really hungry for a viable solution...

Re: HELP!!! (Anamorphic mistake....)

I'd say shoot the rest of it in anamorphic+letterbox. When you unsqueeze the anamorphic/squeeze footage, you'll end up with the same aspect ratio. Just embrace the 2.35:1 ratio that your project now is.

(man, composition in the monitor must have been wickedly difficult -- you had basically almost a 2:1 squeeze thing going on!) :o

Re: HELP!!! (Anamorphic mistake....)

Ok, that sounds like a good idea, Barry. How do we unsqueeze the doublly-squeezed footage into 2.35? Do we just import it as we would the rest of the footage shot on letterbox?

Re: HELP!!! (Anamorphic mistake....)

You're using FCP, and I don't, so I don't know how to do it in that. Should be a simple squeeze/letterbox option though. It would be the same process one would use if they'd shot 16:9 footage and wanted to convert it to a letterboxed-within-4:3 window.
