For me it could be the solution, think that you can not increase in this second burst mode 3k stunning haker GH2 by by redone, canon ..

The burst mode is nearly unusable for actual video production. First, it's not a 3K or 3.2K mode. When in the 16:9 aspect ratio, it's exactly the same as regular 1080p video. You can get a little more resolution by going to 3:2 mode, up to 2.4k, but you will have to crop it down in post.

Second, you have no monitoring at all. The liveview is disabled during burst mode. You have no viewfinder, no LCD screen, no monitor output at all.

Third, it would be impossible to record any sort of sound during the burst mode, because the shutter is clacking loudly the entire time.

Even if a hack was able to change the frame rate to 24, which would make it capable of recording 1 2/3 seconds at a time, it would still be unusable for any sort of general video recording purposes. You could only use it for brief-short special shots where you didn't need to do any monitoring.

Good points.
I would like to see a bit more bitrate in avchd w/ a hypothetical hack.
I see codec fringing on detail, and I love the intangible clean/smooth look of high enough bitrate. (30mbps w/ b frames would be neat VK ;} )

I totally agree, higher bitrate in the 24p mode would be far more useful and cooler than a 1 or 2 second 2.4K burst mode which as Barry said, in 16:9, the gains are minimal. Even with a bit more bitrate than 24Mbps in 24p , I feel the gains will, sorry, would be awesome and will make this cam one of the most powerful tools in ultra-low budget filmmaking ever. This way it will also make those who would be willing to sacrifice a lot to get clean external recording from hdmi somewhat happy:)

Hey Barry you can turn the electronic shutter sound off. So sound shouldn't be an issue.

I have a gh2 beside me right now and the 40fps is silent. It uses an electronic shutter for that particular burst rate. First thing I did was turn off the electronic shutter sound.

Regular photos use the mechanical shutter.

That's good to know Rory_B. Hopefully this can be hacked to shoot much longer footage and could be re-routed through HDMI out maybe. I think the benefit would be to use the entire sensor for anamorphic shooting (4:3). But even if we had to crop for 16:9 we would still have a higher resolution image. I'm guessing.

Anamorphic shooting with a hack like that would be pretty fun. Even if it turned into only a few seconds for specialty shots like Barry mentioned, it would open up some interesting creative challenges.

If anyone has seen The Five Obstructions they'll kind of get what I mean in terms of using short shooting limitations in an interesting way.

Barry! Time to shoot a test ala the hm40/7D still/video test and see what the results are between the gh2 burst mode and video mode. Provided you're inclined to have people pounce on you regardless of the outcome.

I can only get about 20 frames at a time though; seems like maybe I need to reformat the card.

Seriously, I cannot imagine a more limiting, preposterous situation than trying to shoot actual video with this mode -- it's not fun! :) It should be a lot higher quality than the regular video, at the same DOF, but I bet it's not really any higher quality than the ETC mode. But yes, proper testing of it should be done at some point, but even then it's just a curiosity, because there's no way you can make this a practical shooting mode...

Haha yeah it's pretty absurd. But fun to play with from a pure stills perspective. If you could sustain the burst for 10-15 seconds you could come up with some interesting ways to implement it. Of course that's a hack pipe dream right now.

Or just buy an af-100 or tm700 for 1080/60p.
