Hell froze over: ProRes encoding on Windows Premiere Pro!

This now makes ProRes the de facto high end cross platform delivery format. Since Apple is removing all non-64-bit codecs from Macs (DNxHD, Cineform, etc.) this now makes it a lot easier to share video files between PCs and Macs.

This is a good move, but I don't know if that's the end of DNx for certain users (including me on some projects). Some clients (bcasters) still like DNx codecs. And Avid says:

"for customers using Apple Computers and macOS, this announcement does not affect Pro Tools and Media Composer, any other products that have chosen to implement DNxHD and DNxHR natively in the aforementioned manner, or, DNxHD/HR supported through MXF wrappers. DNxHD, DNxHR, Pro Tools and Media Composer will continue to be supported and will be compatible with the current and future releases of macOS. We will continue to improve or introduce new features for DNxHD and DNxHR, proven by recent release of DNxUncompressed option, and will support these new features on various operating systems, including macOS."

I'll guess (and only guess) Adobe will continue to support at least some DNx variants... But I don't know if they've had an announcement about that; I'd guess they'd have a bit of work ahead of them to ensure support on macOS. But doable.

But still, the announcement from Adobe is welcomed.

Yes. Think of a sandwich.

Quicktime is the bread
ProRes is the meat/veg/PB&J

And now think you're going on a gluten-free diet so you're getting rid of the bread.

A better move would be to select a standard delivery format that is open, which would discount practically anything that comes from Apple.

I agree in principle, but is there a better, open, cross-platform standard delivery format? Now that ProRes can be exported from both Mac and Windows, it's essentially what you describe.

Because all Windows user were recommended to uninstall Quicktime so if it isn't needed for Prores that's good.
