Heli Shoot Need Help

I am doing a Helicopter shoot with the Z1 and am trying to find the right Steady Shot setting for the shot.

I did a test and went up in the chopper shooting handheld, I did the test with no Steadyshot, and with Standard. I shooting at full wide on the zoom.

The Standard definitly helped but there was still noticable vibration.
I am not doing any pans or tilts just straight shooting from the back seat.
I wished I had of used Hard to see what effect it would have had, but no time...

I want to get this right before I spend $1200 per hour heli time.
Any help would be great.

Also I wonder if there is a way on the ground to do a test on Hard to see how it affects vibration....maybe in a car?

Thanx

try getting in the back of a car on some mabye not so perfect terrain, I have never had to shoot out of a heli, but it seems like that could help, record one without stabilization, then record the same with with hard stablization. view it one after another.

I can't help you with the settings but there are some things you can ask the pilot to do to help you depending on what your trying to shoot. Notice how many blades the main rotor has, if it has two  its going to be a challenge to get stable footage - they vibrate vertically and horizontally. If it has an articulated rotor head with three or four rotors it should be fairly smooth. Just like driving, if it gets bumpy ask the pilot to slow down. :cheesy: The higher out of ground effect you hover or fly the better. If you’re shooting with the door open ask the pilot to fly a bit out of trim so that there is less air turbulence in the cabin. Its also better if all the other doors and windows are closed, builds up high pressure in the cabin. If you've got the stomach for it and your high enough, put the aircraft in a shallow decent (without bombing in towards the ground) that can often times give you some clean air and less bumps. Of coarse if you descend to far that last bump’s a *****.

If your spending $1200/hr for flight time why not rent a stabilizer or better yet a camera mounted on the aircraft itself? What are you shooting?

Anyway have fun. :engel017:

Taylor,

those shots look great! Where is that? "I'm Australian living in California"
How to speak Australian translation: I wan't to move there.

Have you done any tape to tape color corection on a DaVinci or Pandora? I would be interested in seeing the result.

Hi ChuckS,

Yes, I am very lucky to live where I do in Kelowna, BC. which is about 4 hours East of Vancouver. It also has the best skiing in Canada, with tons of champagne powder.

These images are virgin, un color corrected. I am planning on doing a formal CC once I get it all in the can.

Thanx for your good words...
