Tomorrow night I will be shooting a scene in an environment with a high pressure sodium light contaminating the entire scene (no way to block it)

I will be lighting the talent with tungsten w/ctb gels.

Does anyone know which Shutter speed I should set the camera to?

Also open to suggestions for lighting under these conditions. And, No, I can't move to a different location.

Sodium vapor is really orange like 2100K I would think shooting plain tungsten at 3200K would be better than with CTB you are just making the color temps more off.

Anyway you could shimy up the pole an CTB the street lamp? just kidding, not really...

Channel your inner Robby Müller and add more colours to the lighting. IE; make a style of the place's practicals. I'd probably go for some fluorescents/LEDs for backlight rims on the talent and use the tungstens as fill. The sodiums will wash the background in yellow and presto!, you have a cool looking nitty-gritty street scene.

I've not tested the camera under sodium vapor lights. But the light from such is very 'narrow' in spectrum, and so adding full spectrum lighting to 'swamp' or 'fill out' the narrow 'yellow/orange' of the SV lamp would be some compensation.

Alternatively... in your NLE convert to a monochrome 'B&W'...

But what about the Shutter for the GH1?

Should I use 50 for the tungsten or 60 for the Sodium vapor?

Ken,

I took your excellent advice and did not use the CTB gels. Instead, I used 1/2 CTO and it matched the High Pressure Sodium almost exactly. Now I should be able to apply a color filter in post, more effeciently.

Thanks for your advice!
