FS7: Hedge for mac

I don't know. I use Carbon Copy Cloner for backups of my computer drives and Hedge only for video cards. The difference? - way above my pay grade.

Pfew, took a while to get approved but here I am :)

Thanks for all the questions everyone, I hope I can answer them to your satisfaction...

> I dont understand this though.. "it is not good at keeping backups in sync.".. so SPP is using the finder to copy.. then applying its verification ?

Yes, others apps copy first, then verify. We copy & verify at the same time. SPP doesn't exactly "use Finder", but it share the same methods.

That's the way to do it. Hedge doesn't do incremental backups like CCC, Chronosync and other rsync-derivatives. You should be using Hedge just to move data from A to B, so you can reuse A. Like with media disks in cameras...

Ok thanks for the info Paul..

Workflow involving Shot Put Pro is often contractually required by many production companies, networks and insurance companies. I have never heard of Hedge being an acceptable substitute. Before that changes, I'll stick with SSP.

I'm starting to see and hear about Hedge from loaders and DIT's. Like most things in the industry, once there is a standard established it takes a while before another one can compete unless it has a pre-existing and familiar name attached.

Thanks for the review of Hedge. Even though I already own Shotput Pro I think I'm going to give this a try and see if I like it better.
I too own Shotput Pro but have never found it intuitive enough to stick with it. And never found their customer service as responsive as I'd like, so I parked it and at the suggestion of somebody on this forum months ago, decided to give Hedge for Macs a try. Very, very easy to use and understand and their customer service borders on personal "one on one" contact. Paul Matthijs is very responsive.
I experienced the same fast results while on an EPK (5 all nighters so wait time was critical) and had great success in dumping full Q cards to two drives at a pretty good clip.

I don't think Paul's service borders on "one on one" - It is "one on one". Every question I've every asked gets answered immediately in an email from Paul and so far every problem I've had with Hedge has actually had the solution already in the program I just needed to be pointed to it.

Ive just got the paid version of Hedge.. seems to be faster than SPP V6 .. only thing is Im not getting the notifications to the 'Connect" app.. its connected ok but nothing actually comes through.. shame..no doubt Im doing something wrong..! one of the things I didnt like about SPP is that with the latest V6 it will only send emails/SMS to G mail accounts.... Earlier ones to any email.. its really a good feature so you can go out for a bit too..

Up date.. the connect app might be a bit buggy..? with the latest version of Hedge.. of about 7 tries I got notification 2 times.. so I think I had it set up ok.. the down load is definitely faster.. approx 30mins with SPP.. 18 mins Hedge 100GB XAVC HD 25p.. to BUS powered 5200 rpm USB3 drives..

Seems to be working fine for me. I forgot I was in the middle of a transfer once; got into my car to pick up my daughter when the app let me know the transfer was complete :)

Love Hedge. I moved from Offload, which I liked, but this is much faster and supports multiple transfers at once. I felt Shotput Pro was a bit to robust for what I needed.

Do you mind telling me how you have it set up.. I get connected to my computer.. but no actual notification at the end of the down load.. but yes Hedge itself seems to work well.. Im a long time SPP user .. it does have alot of features I dont need.. I just do simple card to 2 drives ,.. then usually one more.. only have two USB,s out ports.. reader on the thunderbolt (air mac).. hedge is faster.. seems to do the copy and verification almost at the same time.. esp now with 4K these down loads are taking 30 mins for 1hrs footage.. (128GB SxS card).. !! I just want what ever is faster now.. without doing drag and drop

Under "Connect" in Hedge preferences, I have Hedge Connect turned on and I uncheck "Reset code on quit". If you have that checked it will reset the code on relaunch and you would need to enter the new code into the Connect app on your phone. When you launch your app, it should also show the computer you are connected to.

For the download, I have my card reader plugged into my laptop and then two drives attached to a powered USB 3 hub to my laptop. A powered hub makes a difference in download speed vs running the drives from bus power. I have a download kit I bring with me on shoots that has two drives, cables, card reader, and the powered hub.
